We are a family of 4 who recently sailed the Norwegian Sun to Alaska. We had a great itinerary including Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, Glacier Bay and Hubbard Glacier. We felt this ship is showing her age especially in the Garden Buffet area and some public areas. I don't mind worn carpet or a few stains on the furniture, it was the overall feel of the ship that felt neglected. The staterooms, however, were a good size, clean and very adequate. The balcony was wonderful! The layout of this ship has been discussed on the boards- very strange layout, but we expected that. It did not impact our opinion or experience onboard.

The buffet areas are crowded, unfortunately food configuration adds to the congestion of these areas. An example if this, the omelet station blocks the buffet area. Passengers are left to wait the omelet line when all you want is toast and jelly. Several times we excused ourselves and squeezed in briefly to scoop up our food, but it was awkward and felt impolite. The pizza line does the same thing in the sports bar area- It blocks the pasta station while waiting on pizza. The wait can be very long as the pizza station is over-run and understaffed.

Food is a subjective area, but we felt this was the worst experience in the approx. 10 cruises that we have completed. We are not picky eaters, but most nights (4 out of 7) we would have been happier with our local chain steakhouse. The service was slow in the main dining room and the staff was not too interested in explaining certain dishes. We have always had waiters that were happy to guide us on what/what not to order when we could not decide. On previous cruises we have always had friendly encounters and conversation with the wait staff....not on this trip.
