We took the train from Portland Oregon up to Vancouver a few days early and stayed at the Marriot Renaissance Hotel in Vancouver. It was a great location and an easy walk to Canada Place for embarkation. We got there fairly early, and it is well we did, because two ships and few customs agents made for a very long wait. Once through customs, we were escorted to our balcony cabin which was fine for the two of us. I was impressed with the amount of storage. Yes, we had few outlets, and the shower was very small, but the bed was comfy, and the balcony was great. I was surprised to see separate soap, shampoo and conditioner, as I was expecting only the stuff on the wall. We had a coffee maker, but I ended up never using it, because our cabin on deck 9 was so close to the buffet I would just run upstairs and bring coffee back to the cabin in the morning.

I did bring two bottles of Oregon wine on board, and only happened to notice a little man sitting at a tiny desk after customs that said something about corkage fees. No one mentioned the wine in my backpack, but it might have been because they were so slammed with people. Anyway, I paid my $30 corkage fee, but I think it would have been easy to not. We got stickers for the bottles, but I only kept them for our room. We did sometimes take a glass to dinner with us, but it was no problem. By the way, they gave me a corkscrew when I paid the fee, for those that are thinking they need to bring one. Also, the pinot grigio fit perfectly in our refrigerator even with the cruiseline’s stash of things in there.

Since it was 2:30, we found something to eat at the Great Outdoors rather than the closed MDR, and then went onto the top deck for sailaway. Because so many people weren’t onboard yet due to the long wait, we were delayed, but the weather was nice, the drinks were flowing and the music was playing so all was good.
