Of note I am a platinum cruiser with Carnival, which means I have been on more than ten 7-day cruises (this was actually my 17th cruise with them). This should tell you that I believe in this company or I wouldn't keep coming back. They have obviously earned my trust in the past. However, in all honesty I can say that this wasn't my favorite cruise with them, and I will try to outline what I think needs to change. In fairness, I will also mention the highlights of this trip.

I had friends who had booked this trip and about a month prior to sailing asked me if I would like to go. I was a little hesitant because I am now widowed and had no one to go with me, but I ended up booking a premium balcony stateroom on Deck 9 (9279), for which I paid double occupancy, but I knew that going in, and they were in the stateroom directly next to me (9281). We arrived in Miami a day prior to our sailing date of 8/30, staying at the Embassy Suites at MIA. I love this hotel! Your price includes a beautiful suite, free top shelf Happy Hour, an exceptional breakfast, and transport to your ship.

We arrived at the port at approximately 11:00 am. My friends are not platinum cruisers and Carnival no longer allows those traveling with you to board when you do, so I went to the VIFP lounge to check-in, and they went their own way, agreeing to meet up in my stateroom as I can go to my room as soon as I board. It took all of about 5 minutes to check me in, and there was a short wait in the lounge, which was not crowded at all. As we were boarding there were 2 young ladies behind me, one on her 1st cruise, the other on her 2nd. When they started asking me questions about the boarding process, I asked them if they were traveling with someone with VIFP status, and they told me that no, "money talks",. Apparently they were able to "purchase" the perks my husband and I had earned. I asked if they were perhaps supposed to be with the "First to the Fun" group (they board after we do), and they said that no, they had paid for platinum status. STRIKE ONE FOR CARNIVAL. It took my husband and I many years to earn our platinum status, and we spent quite a bit of money with Carnival during this time only to find out that Carnival has now cheapened this perk by "selling it out". I guess I'm really not all that special to Carnival after all.

This was a balcony stateroom on Lido Deck 9. It was roomy, very comfortable, with more than adequate storage for this solo traveler. The bathroom was just fine for me, and I had no problems with this room. I love balcony staterooms, and the higher in the ship I can get, the better. The convenience of walking right out of your room and out onto the Lido Deck/pools/food/bars was worth the extra money. I usually book a room on Deck 10 because I was worried about the noise of the Lido Deck, but noise was never an issue.
