We chose the Boston to Montreal cruise to celebrate our 20th anniversary because we would not have to go through an airport. Leaving from RI we had a car service take us to the Boston Port & we rented a one way car to drive back from Montreal. I had worked with Holland America's rep, Megan, directly from the start & that process was very good. We have to book a balcony cabin at least as we like the extra feeling of space it gives you. About a week before the cruise we were given the opportunity to upgrade to a Neptune Suite for a minimal amount & we jumped at it. This suite included extra's such as early embarkation & debarkation, a separate Neptune Lounge where you can do anything that would normally be done at front office, provide food & drink all day long, etc. The cabin was fantastic......very large, clean, double width balcony, sitting area, separate dressing area, large closets & numerous drawer space. Some of the furniture could use a bit of updating More
but it was very usable. The cabin stewards we had were the best ever as well as the conceriege in the Neptune Lounge. They could not do enough for us & were so friendly & always greeted us by name. Neptune Suites were able to enjoy a special breakfast in the Pinnacle Grill (their premier restaurant). We did eat here most days & it was very nice.....the 2 days we did not we had breakfast delivered to our cabin & ate out on the balcony.
We booked an excursion every day through Holland America....we feel more comfortable if there is some change in time schedules (as did happen to us in Quebec as we had to leave early) and we easily changed the tour when our original one was leaving at a much too early time for us. We enjoyed all of them.
My husband especially enjoyed the onboard Digital classes they had each day. He say he really learned a lot about photo on the computer & more. The instructor was wonderful & so easy to learn from. He also used the gym everyday & loved riding the bike looking at the sea.
We hit most of the shows & enjoyed them all. They had a comedian who was perfect for the audience....no 4 letter words, some references to older shows & such & was actually very funny....not always so.
The ship Maasdam is a mid size so it is really easy to get around & nothing is very far from where you want to be.
The only minor complaint we had was with the Lido Buffet......#1- the hours were not long enough....we came back from an excursion about 3:00 & it was closed so our only option was hot dogs/hamburgers place by the pool, #2 - my husband is a none seafood eater so a few times there was not as many options for him as he would have liked. To the plus side we were able to have steaks cooked to our liking (mine - rare, his - well done). The other complaint is that cruise ships should have free internet as all hotels have this now.....the cost is just too expensive. You can get free WI FI in every port though if you really want it. We just kept our phones & computer off for the duration...it was kind of nice being unconnected for a change.
We really enjoyed this cruise & would possible go on this ship again, especially if it were the same crew but a different location. Glad we did this one but once for this route was enough for us. Less

Cabin review: 024
Fantastic. We loved the size of the room & balcony. Having all the closet space & drawer space you could possibly need was great. The separate dressing area was a nice addition. The room was so clean, the bed very comfortable king size.
