We, a family of 3 are cruising Spain and Portugal on Royal Caribbean’s Adventure of the Seas. As we have done some research online, we are aware that RCL is at least a tier to a tier and a half lower than Celebrity. At best RCL is a 3-½ stars whereas Celebrity would rate a 5. That’s OK as the dates and the destinations suite us well. We are in a junior suite with a verandah in the aft on deck 6. The suite attendant has done a very good job cleaning our suite , etc., and responds quickly to our requests. Th ams can be said of the restaurant/cafeteria staff. The food is quite acceptable and came close to that by Celebrity, and we are not too picky about that.

All was going well and we enjoyed the ports of call except Gibraltar Then on the afternoon of August 25, When we came back from a shore excursion in the afternoon, we went out to the veranda to enjoy the sea breeze and fresh air and a cup of coffee. Then I discovered specks of yellowish dust on the table, on all the deck chairs, as well as on the floor of the veranda and large collections of the same dust outside on the steel deck. As the breeze was blowing into the veranda, all the dust flew into suite as well when the glass door was opened. I called housekeeping who came immediately and mopped the chairs and the table but we already had yellow specks on our clothing and we had white trousers on to boot ! The veranda is the only open area on board I am comfortable with as I have asthma and I do not tolerate cigarette smoke which is omnipresent in most open areas on the ship.

With packs of that yellow dust outside on the steel aft deck beyond our veranda, it was only minutes later that the veranda chairs and table etc were covered again. The attendant suggested for us to call maintenance to see if they can do something to clean the deck, and he informed us that the maintenance crew had been doing some work up form our suite. We found out the next day that they were sanding the wooden guard rails on the veranda above. That left piles of the yellowish dust on our deck and they did not bother to clean the dust piles from the steel deck and with the wind, the dust got into the veranda. The person answering at maintenance said someone will come shortly to investigate, and an hour went by with no one showing up.I called again and they said someone would come soon, and another held an hour went by and nobody. By the time it was 8 pm (the sun was still up ) I called again and got the same stalling promise. I got fed up and went to Guest Relations on way to dinner and was told we should have contacted them instead, and promised something will be done and soon. After we had dinner we found nothing had been done and Guest Relations did not even bother to leave a voice mail or message about why the problem was. I went to GR again and then they said maintenance could not do anything till we docked the next day. That I understood for safety reason but I was miffed to be given the run around when I called maintenance 3 times, if instead they just told me about the safer issue then that would be end of story .

Cabin Review

The junior suite itself is ideal for family of three. However, the guest relations management on board this ship is a big joke.
