Alaskan dream cruise

Sail Date: August 2014
Destination: Alaska
Embarkation: Whittier

Just got home from Alaskan cruise on Norwegian Sun. Loved the cruise first and foremost. Had our very first balcony cabin and now are spoiled! We really thought the ship was very nice, it is an older ship but we felt it was very clean and well maintained. our balcony room was very spacious and out kids ocean view cabin was as well. In our cabin we had 2 separate 3 drawer dressers, also the closet had lots of room for hang up clothes. My only negative was the shower...Can you say TINY!!!!!! the dining room was beautiful , both the Seven Seas and The Four Seasons. Pros and cons of 'freestyle" cruising......loved the fact that we could go to dining room anytime and sit where we wanted with just our family. However didn't really like the fact that we didn't have the same waiter each night and the wait staff didn't do dance or sing like on other ships we've cruised on. Also the menu in both dining rooms didn't have much variety.....each night half of the menu remained the same and they More added maybe 4-5 new main entrees each night and even the dessert menu remained the same with the exception of a few new each night...there was never LOBSTER on the menu or SHRIMP COCKTAIL!!!! I've been on 2 other cruise lines and they ALWAYS have lobster night. This said the food was very good , however very little variety. Loved the cruise director and the staff, everyone was very polite and friendly. When we arrived in Whittier it was pouring and , we got off our bus and had to get our luggage and give it to the cruise staff to put it on the ship. It was pouring rain and we got wet however they moved as quickly as possible and the process of getting o the ship as well as getting off the ship was very organized and smooth.. We discovered the Tappas bar up on deck 12 and loved the ceviche they served. Each day in port getting on and off the ship was great, no hold ups .We loved Alaska more then we ever dreamed. Less

Port and Shore Excursions

Whale Watching

went on boat and we saw up to 40 Orcas!!! the crew were very excited saying this was more whales then they ever see...called it 'super pods" It was raining and chilly but we were all so excited out on deck

Wildlife Tour

(4)

We did the whale watch ad wildlife bear hike. We had Gary as our guide on Bear hike. Love him and the hike however didn't see any Bears, this was disappointing however that's how it goes, cant control the wildlife...lol. He was an excellent guide and told bout Icy Strait and the Hoonah people , enjoyed it very much. Whale watch boat ride was nothing less than AMAZING!!!! The crew were so excited, we saw up to 40 Orca whales in what they called ' super pods"...right up next to the boat, it was raining and chilly but everyone was up on deck and had a great time. the shopping area at port was very nice but the merchandise was much more expensive than in other ports.

We chose to skip an excursion because we were only in port from 7a-1pm. When you get off ship there are dozens of kiosks with options of excursions. We got a bus to Mendenhall glacier, usually its $18-$20pp. this guy gave it to us for $15pp. Bus ride was maybe 15 minutes, bus driver was excellent, told us about Juneau and various tips for the viewing of glacier and that they had had tons of rain{it was raining right then as well} and several hiking trails were closed. we hiked some of the trails there and saw the glacier, also Nugget falls, couldn't get too close cause the trail near the falls was washed out from rain. after we got back to port we walked around some in town, went into the shops and went to Red Dog Saloon.......this was so much fun. We had a "DUCK FART" which is the local shot....loved it.

We loved this port. Lots of nice stores and very reasonably priced jackets and everything else. We did the Lumberjack show, get your tickets on the ship, price is the same as in town and no tax on the ship. We also ate in town, lunch...very good. We walked around town and went to Creek Street and hiked up behind there to the creek and the salmon we running...tons of salmon. You can take the tram up to the hotel there and there's some totem poles to see. We wanted to got to Totem pole park and thought we could walk there but it was further then we thought.

White Pass Scenic Railway

We took the train up and the motor coach back. The train ride is not to be missed, worth every penny. we also were able to stand out on platform to take pics, they had bottled water on the train also. Sit on left going up, and if you ride back on train sit on right, we took the bus back. It was raining during our trip but it cleared up as we traveled, later that day we heard they cancelled some trains because it got very foggy and raining much more.We stopped at the suspension bridge on the bus ride back, loved it

Yukon Suspension Bridge

After getting off the train we boarded a bus and then stopped at the suspension bridge, it was great, beautiful scenery. Nice lil coffee shop there, and small gift shop.

Stanley Park

We purchased a "hop on hop off bus " ticket, it was 2 days for the price of 1 day . $40pp, our kids were $37pp with student I.D. We loved Vancouver very much and we especially loved Stanley Park!!! You can get off in the park then pick up an hour tour within the park. We also hiked some on the trails in the park, there's lots to see and do there. Lots of coffee shops and restaurants in Vancouver. Great city, very cool and hip. lots of bike riding and people out walking their dogs. There is an 8 mile sea wall path that you can either walk or rent a bike and ride along, its beautiful
