I have cruised on all the major cruise lines except Norwegian, so this summer we took the July 27 departure to Alaska. We love cruising and we both excited about the experience. Plus, trying Norwegian was going to complete the big 4 (Carnvial, Royal Carribean, Princess and Norwegian). for us.
Every cruise has good things. Every cruise has bad things, but this ship has some issues.
First and foremost, the critics are right. The service on this ship is far below par. We came with a larger group, and free style dining is not a good way to go. We often had to wait to be seated, and often they would comp us champaigne while we waited. Once at the table, we were often ignored or maybe the food just took that long to arrive. An hour plus meal often drifted into two hours plus. And the food quaility was fair. The daily steak is fine, because it is covered with garlic butter. There is no lobster night and prime rib was only served in the buffet. So, the usual amazing dinner was a huge let down. This alone will make us hesitant to use Norwegian again. Dinner is the most important part of any cruise.
The buffet was always so very crowded. Seriously! Several times we couldn't find seating. The buffet at the end of the ship was awesome to sit at if you could find a seat (we did breakfast and an occasional lunch time there). The set up was weird, and you always had to walk the starboard side to get to the back of the ship on deck 12. I was always taught, stay away from the buffet. I think it was equal to taht of the diningroom food.
The ship design wasn't great. Deck 6 is the main bar level with the casino. Weird to have it down there. It is dark and the windows are not inviting at all.
We did do the Martini tasting. That was a blast. Do that. The martini bar actually was really good.
The speciality restaurants: Ugh, what a rip off. Always trying to get their extra money from us. We did the Teppan Table restuarant. It was fun and good, but we paid $25 per person to eat there. Gosh, I can do shoguns here for that price.
Casino was pretty big. Fun, but ate my money. Surprise.
Pool area was fine. The water slide was gone, too bad for the kids.
Fitness room was fine. Wierd it is on the side of the ship and not in the front. Different.
There didn't seem to be enough room for all the passengers. On other cruise ships, there are lots of rooms and halls to just hang out. This cruise had deck 6-7 which were both crowded all the time. Deck 12 always crowded. A few areas we found to escape, but my opinion was it was crowded.
Okay, that is about it. Cruising is always good, but I will look other places next time.
We took a bus tour of the city and later were taken over to Mendenhall Glacier. The overall trip was interesting and the glacier was incredible. The visitor center is amazing, and the surrounding streams are beautiful. Definitely a must!
It was okay. Loves of forest. We did our flight on the most sunny day of the year. Beautiful views from the skies. Saw some goats, but that is it. 30 minutes was plenty.
Amazing train trip. If you book it, you want to sit on the left side of the train on the way up. The views were incredible. This was amazing. You travel on cliffs all the way up to the top. WOW. I loved it, but it is long. Bring some snacks and bring your camera. I highly recomment that you step outside while you are on the trip. The views from outside are amazing.
The arrival times to Victoria was rediculous. We arrived at 5:00 pm. Dumb. So we just took the bus tour. it was fun, but the sun went down and then you freeze on the top. It was something to do with the limited time we had.
