As Good As It Gets!

Sail Date: July 2014
Destination: Eastern Caribbean
Embarkation: Miami

I read a lot of rave reviews about the Norwegian Getaway before my cruise with a group of friends and I have to say... they were right!

We boarded the ship very fast and without any hassles. It was super easy! This is our 4 cruise with Norwegian and the thing that impressed me most about boarding the ship is that they didn't hound you with offers for dining or drinks or the casino. As you explored the ship, you would find tables offering specials, but it wasn't "in your face" like it was on other NCL ships. Very refreshing!

The Getaway is HUGE and BEAUTIFUL. We were in a balcony on the 11th floor. Some reviews said the room and balcony seemed small, but we thought it was a perfect size for 2 people. Honestly, you spend most of your time outside the room anyway.

ENTERTAINMENT

The first night we saw the Illusionarium show. Sure, the plot line was cheesy, but the magicians were fantastic! There were 4 different magicians that will keep you asking "how More did they do that"! If you have the Ultimate Dining Package like we did, the Illusionarium is free the first night. We heard bad reviews of the food, so we ate at La Cucina first :) We had 2 dinners and they were both awesome! The dinner at the show was a filet with shrimp. There was a vegetarian option also. The desert was just so-so.

Legally Blonde blew me away! I wasn't expecting much from a cruise ship rendition of a musical, but oh man! It was very fast-paced, very funny, and the performers were top-notch. The singing was great and so was the acting. Also, NCL did a nice job of designing a stage where props can be lowered and lifted through the floor. I was super impressed!

We also went to the comedy show and dueling pianos. Both were very fun.

FOOD

Over the course of the 7 days, we ate at La Cucina, Le Bistro, Cagney's, Moderno, Teppanyaki, for dinner. All of them were great, but we would have to say Cagney's was the best food and the classiest of all. Another food place not to miss was the Noodles Bar. Wow! You have to pay a little extra for a snack or lunch there, but it was totally worth it! The food tasted fresh, authentic, and delicious.

The food at Le Bistro was great as usual (we've eaten there on all of the other NCL ships we've traveled on), but there atmosphere was much different. All of the other times we've been to Le Bistro on other NCL ships, Le Bistro was very classy, relaxing, and formal. On the Getaway, it's very loud, cramped, and not relaxing at all.

EXCURSIONS

We went off the ship on our own in St. Maarten, St. Thomas, and Nassau. All were great islands. On St. Maarten, definitely do yourself a favor and go to Maho Beach. Even if you go for an hour on your way to a different excursion, it's a unique experience to have a 747 flew JUST over your head. You can stand on the beach, drinking a beverage, and just take-in the experience. We went from there to Orient Beach by taxi. Orient is a beautiful beach with restaurants and bars. In St. Thomas and Nassau, we didn't do a whole bunch... just got off the ship and walked around for a few hours and then hopped back on.

THE SHIP AND POOL AREA

As far as the ship goes, there was so much to do. All of the staff was extremely polite and went out of there way to help. Our cabin steward, who went by the name of "Captain Morgan", made sure to come meet us and ask us about ourselves. It was a nice touch and he didn't have to do it... but it enhanced the experience for sure!

When I heard about the water slides, I was like "water slides on a cruise ship, they must be lame". Um, these were some of the best slides I've been on! There's one where the bottom drops out and is actually very scary lol Another one will whip you in circles super fast and is a blast. There are others for kids too.

The only major complaint I have about the ship is the pool area. Many other people have hit on this before, but having one small pool for adults on a ship of 4,000 passengers wasn't the best idea. In their defense, the staff did a great job of keeping kids out of the pool which made it a little better, but man, there was no room. It would have been great to have another pool in Spice H2O. Maybe this will be a change on the next few ships.

Overall, this is the by far the best NCL ship was have been on and it was a GREAT cruise! We will be back on Norwegian next summer and are already counting down the days! Less

Cabin review: Norwegian Getaway 11780

Great cabin with enough space, tons of storage, nice bathroom, and a quaint balcony.
