A Fantastic Family Cruise on the Sun

Sail Date: July 2014
Destination: Alaska
Embarkation: Vancouver

We had a fantastic time: wife and I 60+, son and daughter-in-law 40's, grand son 18, grand daughter 10. This was a grad gift for GS, so we had connecting balcony cabins deck 9 port. Son and DIL similar position starboard so we could all rush to whichever room had best views. Service was top notch all around, staff made us feel genuinely welcome. Ate all meals in MDR and buffet and found MDR to be as good as most restaurants, buffet a notch lower but still good. Entertainment was good except that comedian Simon on last night went a little blue in 7:15 show, embarrassing with GD present. All the extra activities such as trivia were good too. Lots of talking about Bingo, pull tabs, Specialty Restaurants, Spa and pictures, but no high pressure. What can you say about the awesomeness of the glaciers?

We flew to Seattle on Southwest (no bag fees), stayed overnight, too Amtrak Cascades to Vancouver and stayed there pre-cruise...Southwest, hotel and train still cost less than flying More to Vancouver direct, plus added sightseeing.

At Whittier we used BAGS program to pre-check luggage to airlines, then rented Avis minivan one-way to drive to ANC. One way is costly ($390 total rental) but compares favorably to bus tour for 6. Less

Cabin review: Norwegian Sun 9068

Others have written about a sewage smell, and they're right! This was very evident both inside and on the balcony. Our cabin was port side aft on deck 9. My son was in a similar location starboard and had no problem, so maybe starboard is a better choice. A minor annoyance, but not a trip-spoiler.
