Awesome Ship, Food & Service!!!

Sail Date: June 2014
Destination: Eastern Caribbean
Embarkation: Miami

First off, thanks to everyone who post on Cruise Critic, this is a valuable tool to use when booking various cruises, venues, etc. We just returned from our 7 day Eastern Caribbean+ cruise on the beautiful ship "Getaway". We booked the Haven Aft Penthouse Suite, whcih in my opinion is the only way to go if you are able to swing the additional cost. Our trio have been on multiple crusies through out the years and have been to the Caribbean several times before. We also had the UBP, UDP and prepaid gratuties included at time of booking. All shows and dining options were booked 55 days, although now i hear is has been changed to 90 days. Three of us started our trip from LAX to Miami on a red-eye flight. Arrived Miami around 5:30 am and settled into our B2 Hotel around 8:00am, nothing great but close to the Port. We spent the day in South Beach and had a great dinner at one of our favorite places, "Lario's On The Beach", great Cuban food!

Embarkation/Sail Day

Arrived at More the Port of Miami around 10:30am and were escorted into the private area for Haven guests, where they had food and beverages available. After filling out all of thee necessary paperwork, we were issued our platinum room keys. We were thn personally escorted to another area exlcusive for Haven guests, which also had snacks and beverages. Once the ship cleared customs, we were personnaly escorted us up to the Haven Lounge. By the way, if you want the customary embarkation photo, please tell the escort before because they will bypass the photo opportunity. We arrived at the Haven Lounge and immediately were greeted by our concierge Anoop and staff memebrs, who greeted us by name, very impressive! The staff started serving cocktails and mini sliders, a nice touch. We decided to have lunch in the Haven restaurant prior to going into our suite. The Haven area is very beautiful and we loved every minute of this part of the ship. Our suite was ready by 1:00pm and so the journey begins.....

Cabin 13902 Haven Aft Penthouse Suite

What can i say about this room, awesome!!! We arrrived in our 2 bedroom suite and had flowers, champagne/wine and fruit basket in the dining room. The suite is massive with plenty of storage, two bathrooms, Lavazza coffee/expresso machine and of course the main reason I love the Aft, the HUGE balcony!!! Love the WASH from the engines, so soothing!!!!

Dining Options

We had the pleasure of dining in most of the speciality restuarants, here is a listing of restaurants:

Le Bistro - Excellent - Lobster and Escargot

Cagney's - Excellent - Filet and Lobster

La Cucina - Very good, alot of people have complained but I actually thought it was good.

Moderno Churrascaria - Excellent, you must like meat though to enjoy this venue.

Ocean Blue on the Waterfonrt - We had the lobster roll, nothing great.

Teppan Yaki - Excellent, had a blast, had dinner with a bunch of Miami dade police officers and family, they were awesome! We saw them several times during the cruise!

O'Sheehan's Neighbor Bar and Grill - Pub food, not bad fish and chips, wings. etc.

Tropicana Room - Only had dinner once, various choices, it was pretty good, our waiter was excellent!

Haven Restaurant - Excellent food and service, had breakfast there most days, unless we were having breakfast on our balcony. Note, ask Suzanne and she will deliver food from any of the specialty restaurants, it just might take a little longer.

Shows

Illusionarium - Awesome show, a must see in my opinion. The food is just ok, but not as bad as people say, we had dinner before at Cagney's. The magic show is amazing and is first class. If you book this the first night and you have the UDP it is free. Of course, Haven guests are escorted in thru a private entrance and seated in the front row.

Burn The Floor - The Latin-tinged show features an eclecitc mix of music from classics to Shakira. On display are dance styles such as the cha-cha, samba, salsa, rumba, Lindy hop, swing, waltz and paso doble. Once again, Haven guest have a private area behind red velvet ropes, a nice touch. Excellent show!

Legally Blonde; The Musical - Ok musical, not my style but rave reviews from others. Others say "Kind-hearted, comical and camp, Legally Blond; The Musical is right up there with Mamma Mia! and Hairspray." Once again Haven guests have a private area for seating.

The Grammy Experience - Carolyn Malachi was the R&B Grammy nominated artist performing on the ship during the week, one word AWESOME!!!

Bars/Pools/Ship/Casino

All of the bars were great that I visited. The pool area was always jammed, have to get there early for a chair. Love the layout of the ship overall, very easy to get around. Almost everything is centered around deck 6,7 & 8, go explore and enjoy! Won some money in the casino and did not experience all the smoke that people talk about. Yes if you are sitting next to people smoking you will smell the smoke. I played in the non-smoking area of the casino and had no problems at all.

The Ports

St. Maarten - Awesome place, been there many times before, our favorite tour guide company is Bernard's, they do a great job. If you book, ask for D.J. or the Mailman, both excellent. We spent a few hours at Orient Beach and had lunch at La Playa Beach Club, very nice. If you haven't checked out Maho Beach, you should, amazing place to watch the giant jets fly overhead to the airport.

St. Thomas - We always grab a cab and head to Coki Beach where the beach is crystal blue and has great snorkeling. Get there early before the other ships arrive, by the early afternoon, the beach becomes very crowded. Once there Fat Boy and Pearl will take very good care of you, umbrellas, chairs and food, great conch fritters as well!!!

Nassau, The Bahamas - My least favorite of the three ports, just not enough time to do much. Spent the day shopping and swimming at the British Colonial Hilton next door to the ships. I think NCL will probably dump this port in the future.

The Haven Experience

What can I say, the Haven is the only way to go if you have the additonal funds available, We were treated like royalty, first on and off the ship, priority dining and show priority, 24 hr butler, the staff amazing and Anoop, the best! Also, I had the pleasure of attending The Chef's Table that was held in the Haven Restaurant, you must book this early, only 12 guests are invited. This 9 course, 4 hour dining experience with wine pairings is simply amazing! There are also photos taken and you receive a signed copy of the menu by the executive chef along with the photos in a nice folder. In addition, you get a behind the scnes tour of the kitchen the next day by the sous chef. We love the Haven experience!!!

Final Thoughts

The three of us had a wonderful time on this ship. Everything was first class and would highly recommend this ship to everyone, you can still smell the new paint and carpet! If you have any questions, please let me know and I will try to answer. Have a safe & successful day! Less

Coki Beach is the best for crystal blue waters and snorkeling.
