Very good, in parts

Sail Date: June 2014
Destination: Baltic & Northern Europe
Embarkation: Newcastle (England)

Second cruise with the Thomson line.

The cruise was a mixed bag of excellence to very poor.

The Thomson Spirit is an old ship, tatty in places and very noisy- shakes and rattles almost continuously, regardless of the weather.

Embarkation and disembarkation- well organized.

Decor of ship- tatty in places and an awful sewerage smell emanated from the lower decks. Many passengers commented on the awful pong of sewerage from decks 1 to 5.

Cabins- Basic, noisy and ours stunk so much that we spent as little time as possible in it. We were on the 1st deck and a sewerage smell was always present. Plumbing kept on failing in our cabin and others on deck one- one couple complained 6 times that their toilet would not flush and on one occasion the lady only prevented a spill over from the toilet into her cabin when she returned to her cabin to collect her jacket.

Food- as much as you want to eat ever, if this it your preference. However, More quantity, is at the expense of quality. Hot food often cold or warm- choice became monotonous after a week.

Staff- generally excellent

Excursions- Expensive, although very well organized and we were pleased we booked some of our excursions with Thomson.

On board drinks- expensive

Entertainment- mixed. Some excellent and some easily forgot. The stage entertainment team very enthusiastic.

Days at sea- if the weather is wet the ship lacks the facilities to catered for the passengers who remain inside the ship. Lack of adequate places to sit, very cramped and the smell and heat of nearly 2,000 people cramped into a small ship became unbearable for many on us on a wet day at sea.

Days at sea on a sunny day- Don't expect a pleasant swim in the pools. Small pocket size pool, filled with sea water daily. Tiles missing and damaged on one pool and out of action.

Loyalty- many of the customers were very regular Thomson cruise customers, therefore, for this group of people, Thomson provides what they want. However, my husband and i will try a different cruise company next time we decide on a cruise. Less
