VOS for July 4th - a packed ship - the Great, the Good, and the Bad

Sail Date: July 2014
Destination: Western Caribbean
Embarkation: Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades)

Having recently been refreshed and refitted the VOS was beautiful. The carpets, decor, pools, everything was very nice and in many ways it was like being on a new ship. This was a four day cruise to Cozumel and it had two days at sea which we love. We wanted to test drive this class of ship as we are contemplating a much longer cruise on a sister ship. Boarding was a breeze 30 minutes from port parking to our balcony stateroom. The first thing I noticed was how clean the ship was and our cabin had been not just refreshed but cleaned - smelled clean - no messy sticky surfaces, no smudged woodwork, very nice.

The boat drill was conducted outside in a blazing heat! Why does RCCL still insist on passengers going outside - most other cruise lines take you to a public room and perform the drill there. Boarding lunch was not so good - food was running out and not being replenished.

Two negatives that stood out from the onset: 1- the staffing appeared in adequate most More notably by the pools and in Chops and the Italian restuarant. 2- the staff wiith the exception of the front desk, cruise staff, and Aquarius dining room was not engaged in their jobs, seemed very unhappy, and were solemn and gruff.

Outdoor areas were nice though the main pool was packed and as always the reserving of deck chairs was a problem. The Crown and Anchor room was gorgeous and the refit resulted in a bweautifully appointed lounge, pinnacle lounge, and Iszumi. The Diamond Lounge (which we used and enjoyed) was beautiful if not a little undersized.

Being World Cup the sports fans had a field day and it was alot of fun.

The spas on RCL continue to be a disappointment and compeitive disadtvantage when compared to Princess or NCL.

We dined in all three specialty restaurants: Chops was average to poor - the staff was overwhelmed our poor waiter ahd 6 tables 3 tables were for 4 2 were for 2 and the next was for 6 and we wera all seated at approx the same time. Menu was nice but our food consistently arrived at room temprature - a disappointment and not worth the $ 30.00 per person cover charge, The Italian was solidly good but again service was poor through our waiter, Ali, did his best he was harried and theya re so scripted we got the greeting speech three times. Iszumi was good and despite there only being a few other diners the fiorst night the service was slow and items ordered were forgotten, they appear to do a big business with crew for take away and I think this impacted service delivery to passengers.

The buffet was fair, the Park Cafe was good, the main dining room was very good the night we ate there and to it over again we would stick to main dining room (which we willd on on the longer cruise next year).

The entertainment was just ok, one show was cancelled due to technical issues, the comedian was not very funny, but the singer headliner was very good and had aot of energy. The arielists performed once and their show in the centrum was not well advertised. The Centrum proved to be a great venue and was fun hub of activity, though if you were trying to get somthing done at the reception desk at night while music was playing the poor staff could not hear nor effetively communicate because of the loud volume of music, singers, etc.

Disembarcation was 45 minutes late due to gangway problems, the crowds of "walk off" guests was unbelievable and they ended up snaking us around the ship and into the dining room where breakfast was being served. The waiters were good sports as were the guests trying to have their breakfast. This could have been better handled - like putting everyone in the beautiful and large theater.

Again this was a quick getaaway and a test drive - we enjoyed it Less

Cabin review: Vision of the Seas 7054

Beautiful room. Spotless new bathroom, small balcony but we did sit out and use it so adequate. Great location under overhang of upper decks and near the centrum. Loved having the six foot couch in the room. TV was not great but you do not go on a crusie to watch tv. None of the online services avaialble through TV like on the newer ships.
