Carnival all the way

Sail Date: June 2014
Destination: South Pacific
Embarkation: Sydney (Australia)

I sailed with my mother and sister for a girls trip away on Carnjval Spirit.

We chose a 12 noon boarding time and there were no delays, straight through check in a and straight on board. We were ushered up to deck 9 for lunch as was everyone who boarded, being our first cruise we were not aware that we could take our lunch elsewhere to eat and struggled to find a spare table. This was the only time the ship appeared crowded.

After lunch we went down to check out our cabin, just beautiful. We chose to get a cabin with a balcony, if this is within your means I would highly recommend this. A lot of nights we pried the door open to have fresh air during the night and listen to the water going by - a note, take an ocky strap, this will save having to wedge a chair to keep the door open. Bathroom was plenty big enough for 3 girls with lots of lotions, makeup etc, shower was awesome, water pressure was great as was water temperature. We had two single beds and our couch More made into another single which was just as comfortable as the other beds, again plenty of room. Wardrobes had more than sufficient space for all our clothes (we took far too many) and our suitcases fitted nicely under the beds and out of the way for the entire cruise. Our room steward Wayan, was one of the nicest people you would ever meet, he couldn't do enough for us, getting us extra pillows and an additional bathrobe - always with a smile, not to mention the towel animals he left for us each evening. Cabin was very quiet, we heard not a thing from other guests and was ideally located to deck 9 so we could just go up the stairs for a cup of tea.

We chose to eat in the Empire Dining Room each night and chose the early dining option (5:30), although most nights we didn't go until 6. This was mainly so we could catch the 7:30 show down at the theatre. Meals and service were fantastic, we sat with strangers on the first night who quickly became our friends and we enjoyed dining with them every night to catch up on the days events. Don't be afraid to dine with strangers, this is how we made a lot of new friends. Meal selection was varied, waiters were very attentive and service was fast. If you don't finish your bottle of wine at night, they will cap it for you and keep it for the next night if you wish.

Shows each night were fantastic and varied. Mum usually went to bed after the show and my sister and I carried on into the night enjoying the R rated comedy shows and spending a lot of time at the piano bar listening to Natalie and her beautiful voice. We weren't interested in the casino at all, though it was usually busy, especially the poker machines. Plenty of karaoke, nightclub different bars scattered around and music to suit everyone.

Each morning we joined Stu for a few laps walking around the upper deck we then headed down to the gym to do some weights, sometimes an exercise class, then back down to our cabin to shower, where we would find mum relaxing out on the balcony reading with her cup of tea. We all then usually headed up to the buffet breakfast which consisted of EVERYTHING. My favourite was the made to order omlettes, porridge, birscher muesli and fruit salad. Although there was heaps of cooked stuff to chose from, lots of people seemed to overload on bacon and hash browns, all the fried stuff, if you wanted it, it was there.

We had dinner one night in the fine dining restaurant and for an extra $40 per head was well worth it, 5 course meal was delish and the service was second to none.

There were photographers everywhere, we had lots and lots of photos taken for free, though we purchased very few, they were just too expensive. I would think that if Carnival lowered the prices of the photos they would sell more instead of just throwing them away.

We went on shore excursions at every port, though stopping in Port Vila on a Sunday when everything is closed seemed a bit of a waste. We still had a good day looking around the city though. In Noumea we went and booked the zodiac tour over to Duck Island, if we went again we would just take the local water taxi over. It is a beautiful little island. It be sure to wear reef shoes, the beach is totally coral, snorkelling is fantastic. In Port Vila we took the Cascade waterfall tour - well worth it, take your waterproof camera up into the falls, it's beautiful. Included afternoon tea. Getting on and off the ship at ports was extremely well organized and stress free, kudos to the staff who organise this.

We used the Serenity Deck (adults only area) a few times, it was hard to get a pod most of the time, but didn't let it stress us, there are plenty of places to lie about and sun yourself.

We had a go on the Green Thunder waterside, even 69yo mum went down, so proud of her, it was fun. We didn't have perfect weather the whole trip but it didn't matter too much, we spent the first couple of days trying to find our cabin and doing laps of the ship - was hilarious. We had great weather at the islands.

The shops are always having "specials", don't stress if you miss the time that these are on, they are always repeated.

I note that others have complained about the spirit, just relax, don't sweat the small stuff. We had a fantastic time and would recommend to anyone. I have a already booked my next cruise on Legend next year and can't wait. Less
