The Celebrity Solstice cruise to Alaska the week of 6/27/14 was as beautiful an Alaskan experience as anyone could hope for. From the light, airy architecture of the ship to the graciousness of the entire staff to the numerous entertainment options -- and then to the star attraction itself, Alaska -- it's easy to fall in love with both the cruise line and the destination. This was my fourth cruise to Alaska and it will not be my last. It was my third time on Celebrity, and they will definitely see me again. I would have to classify this cruise as mature and intelligent. Don’t expect amusement park features or hairy chest contests by the pools. Do expect a subdued sophistication that fit like a glove for my husband and myself. Our demo: My husband is 59; I am 61. We live in the Pacific Northwest. I have been on 20 different cruise ships.
Standouts:
Patti Honacki, the cruise director: Kudos to Celebrity for hiring this warm, intelligent, tireless woman who never once felt rehearsed or disingenuous.
The Sunset Veranda on deck 6 faces the wake of the ship. The view is magnificent, but please note that on deck 6, there is a small landing just beyond the balcony. We could not see straight down. It didn't really matter. There was no noise, nor was there any soot. We have now been spoiled by this type of stateroom and will try to get this location on future cruises, though we will try for a higher deck.
