Just returned from our first Princess Cruise on the Coral. We did a RT from Vancouver. Went a few days early and stayed at the Blue Horizon (based on reviews here). Perfectly satisfied. Did the HOHO and spent most of the time at the aquarium which we really enjoyed.

Saturday dropped our bags early and did Fly Over Canada at Canada Place. The first go is 10am and after it was the normal wait to get on the ship. They started boarding a little before 12.

As I said, this was our first Princess cruise, we normally go on Holland America and Celebrity. This is just my opinion but we disappointed with Princess.

First the good things: The crew was great. We had the most attentive steward we've had in many a year. The entertainment was excellent and it was different on the return cruise which was very nice.

What we didn't like: The food! I think they forgot to load herbs and spices when they left. Food was bland and disappointing. We asked some Princess regulars and they said it was the worst of any ship they have been on. BTW, we don't consider ourselves to be picky.

The ambiance in the Horizon - oh, wait there was no ambiance.

There is no forward facing lounge. The only front facing windows are in the Horizon.

No daily "newspaper" like other ships have.

The barely there shower. Plus other little things. Doubt if we will cruise Princess again.

Cabin review:

P624
Small, but we knew that. We normally book oceanview so we can afford more cruises. It had more than ample storage and hanging space for us. There are no closet doors so that made a difference. The cabin steward was great. The room was made up as soon as we left. Other cruises it is taking most of the morning to get room done. The shower is VERY small. Someone said it is RV sized. I hope those who paid for a better cabin got a better shower. The pillows were like the ones your Aunt Agatha would bring out when you stayed overnight.

Port and Shore Excursions

Whale Watching

Weather was bad. Heard some of the ship tours didn't go. We were on a jet boat and went about 23 knots. Were launching off the swells and pounding down again. It was an E ticket ride but I think my back still hurts from the pounding. Really no opportunity to go outside due to the weather.

Saw quite a few whales. Maybe on a better day we would have enjoyed it more.
This tour also included a stop at a salmon hatchery. That was pretty much a joke. Can't really recommend that part.

Glass Blowing

Go to Alaska - blow glass - really? This is an experience we wanted to do for a long time and we enjoyed it. Would have liked if it were a little more hands on but I am sure there are liability issues.
We ended up with two nice balls that we can say we made. The gardens were in bloom and were nice to see. If you only have the opportunity for one tour in Skagway, White Pass would probably be better. Since we were there twice it worked out well.

Scenic Drive

Great tour. The RR is the most popular but we think this was not only much cheaper, but better. Went by mini bus and stopped and got off several times. Mike, the driver, was outstanding.
The ship had bus tours as well. They were on large coaches and we saw them just slowly passing through the places where we stopped and got out.
We did the White Pass Summit Excursion and were more than satisfied. Chilkoot Charters are great.
