This cruise was a disaster from day 1.
A sampling of the recurrent problems include:
Stateroom toilet repeatedly broke
Air conditioning did not work / blew smoke at times
Multiple blinking light bulbs for several days of the cruise (unable to use the lights at night due to strobe effect)
Stateroom phone did not work
Stateroom attendants were rude and didn't speak a word of english except to tell us what we didn't need, ie clean towels, ice, fresh fruit, clean sheets. Stateroom attendants never knocked before entering
Food was constantly cold in the dining room. At least 1 dish each night came complete with hair in it. Under cooked lobster that lead to food poisoning with painful vomiting. When I reported the food poising my wife and I were both locked in the room on "isolation" for over 40 hours while in port with no food or services
Exploding sewage pipe down the hall.
No water for 3 days.
No clean towels (we grabbed clean towels from the pool)
When we complained about the service the captain personally came to scream at us.
There were so many more problems on this cruise that I can't even begin to write them all.
The most common adjective used to describe the rotterdam dining room food was "hospital cafeteria quality"
Complaints from other guests included no showers for the duration of the cruise, no running water for the entire cruise, being locked up and yelled at for complaining about food or service.
All problems were reported to the front desk as soon as they happened. For our "troubles" we were given a $50 soda card which was charged to our room when we tried to use it.
We will never sail Holland America again.
We sail at least 2 14 day cruises a year and we have never had a problem on any ship until this one. But then again, we've never sailed Holland American before.
The ports we visited were great. My wife and I loved every minute that we were on shore, but we hated every moment on the ship.
The ship itself is in desperate need of repairs.
Multiple plumbing issues, pervasive rust and peeling paint, worn out soft seating areas, and wooden railings that give massive splinters.
From speaking to multiple crew members and entertainers on the ship the problems stem from the cabin and his apathy towards both maintenance and customer concerns. He is outwardly hostile towards guests attempting to speak to him even if stuck in the same elevator and just saying "good morning"
The officers on this ship are a disgrace.
