SeaDream 1 was long anticipated to be the ultimate Baltic cruise, after reading so many positive reviews about the crew, service, food, atmosphere and intimacy. It did deliver on those topics, five star all the way.
It was the many small and large problems that occurred almost daily and the lack of response, apology or amends by management that disappointed us, our friends and many of the 100 guests on board this June from Hamburg to Stockholm. The ship had just left drydock so the interiors were freshly redecorated and the staterooms looked attractive with new carpets, curtains and upholstery. There's adequate storage and a small but well appointed bathroom, and frequently re supplied fresh towels, nice bed linens, too.
The most difficult situation was a lack of functioning air conditioning in many cabins for the entire 11 days.
The ship has no balcony cabins so one couldn't even open a door or window for fresh air. Two of the three passenger decks were affected, guests made the best of it, but it was difficult for many to sleep well.
Many attempts were made by the engineering crew and outside repair men to fix the system, but no luck cooling down dozens of cabins. It took the captain a week to address the issue and barely an apology was made at three separate private cocktail parties, one for each cabin deck, no compensation was offered. An oin board credit or future cruise discount would have gone a long way to make amends to the guests.
There are several bars on the ship, but only one was open at cocktail hour. Just as the evening began and the temperature was perfect at 630 pm they closed the outdoor bar and opened the indoor lounge bar. No one wanted to leave the sunshine and views on deck six and go into a shady room for pre dinner drinks.
There were other issues with two missed ports, lack of planning for cold, rainy day activities, having breakfast served only on deck on cold mornings, so cold staff passed out blankets to guests, non functioning internet service, and several more minor but annoying issues others will comment on in later reviews. The crew were friendly, hard working, cheerful and did their best, the food was superb.
Maybe early June was the wrong time for the Baltic, no one ever used the pool or the water sports equipment stowed in the on board marina. The bikes were used in several ports and much appreciated.
