Sail Date: May 2014

BACKGROUND: I took a weeklong Inside Passage cruise round-trip out of Seattle on Norwegian Sky in May of 2003, and I felt like it was time for a return engagement. The extra day and extra port (Icy Strait Point, a cruiseline-developed destination just outside the little fishing town of Hoonah on Chichagof Island) drew me to this itinerary, and the chance to sail on Solstice was part of the draw as well, as I had heard so many good things about this class of vessel.

PRE-CRUISE: Having had the opportunity to enjoy spending some time in Vancouver and Seattle on earlier trips, I decided to fly into Portland four days before this cruise. Flight day turned into a bit of a debacle, thanks to a mechanical issue before even reaching the runway of my home airport, which immediately blew any chance of making my tight connection in Denver. The next flight out of Denver they could get me on left some ten hours later than the one originally scheduled, and despite my six-hour wait in Denver, they somehow managed to lose my bag as well. By the time I got to my hotel, I'd been up for 24 hours, not to mention the half-ration of sleep the night before.

Despite all that, after a good night's sleep, (and delivery of the missing bag,) I really enjoyed Portland-- bike-friendly, lively street life, great restaurants, really nice people, and beautiful Washington Park, where I gave my camera some exercise at the world-class Japanese Garden. (I could also see why there's a television series devoted to poking fun at the city, what with the extraordinary concentration of bearded hipsters, tattoos and piercings per square mile.)

Cabin Review

I found my standard outside midship cabin (3141) to be spacious, quiet, well-arranged, and with plenty of storage space. Good comfy bed and nice sheets. I'd prefer the usual movable hand-held showerhead to the fixed one provided, though.
