Great first-time experience!

Sail Date: May 2014
Destination: Alaska
Embarkation: Vancouver
celebrating our honeymoon a year late on the sun with about 20 other friends from all over the country. we could not have had a better first-time experience. yes, the ship is dated. no, the food is not 5-star (we did not try any of the upcharge restaurants). no, we did not travel for the food, nor did we mind the dated appearance of some areas of the ship. that said, i have to wonder if i was on the same cruise as those who gave it a bad review. yes, we are newbies. sometimes that is a good thing in my book. and, we are not picky and realize nothing is going to be perfect. ever. we started our vacation a few days earlier than the cruise. we opted to stay at the fairmont vancouver airport. loved the hotel. we took public transportation (oh the horrors!ha ha ha) and used the very convenient and budget-friendly skytrain, bus system and water taxis in order to explore the city. for less than $10 a day, we travelled many areas of the city including capilano and grouse mountain. yes. from More the airport. yes. we felt safe and saved a bundle. yes. vancouver is a bit expensive. ok, on to the cruise. embarkation is quite the experience for a new cruiser. it was handled very efficiently with plenty of staff to direct you and get you checked in. most of them were quite pleasant. once onboard, we were a bit surprised at how dated the lobby appears. sort of right inbetween being "vintage" and just being too 90's. never mind, we were not there as interior design critics. a place can look great and have crappy service as we all know. on to the room....our steward, jerico, was so fantastic. we so enjoyed his bubbly presence each day and evening. these kids work SO hard to make everything right. imagine having 16 cabins to service twice a day and you have to get it done 7 days a week in 12 hours each day. yeah. try that. our stateroom was always looking neat and clean and we even got extra towels when we asked. two things we did NOT enjoy....the pancakes (i do not care where you try them, they are awful. i told the restaurant manager from four seasons she ought to consider using them for frisbee golf on the deck...a whole other story there.) and the smoke in the casino wafting through the entire atrium. in today's age, smoking should be outlawed indoors. period. (also of note, my hubby is a cigar smoker and enjoyed his outdoors on the observation deck). our dinners were mostly in the seven seas and four seasons. they have similar menus and the food was delicious. not 5-star but way above "just edible". the variety in the buffet was wonderful with plenty of options for vegetarians. (again, do NOT eat the pancakes. ha ha ha...a crew member did tell me that they start making those pancakes at 0300. try doing that at home. YOUR pancakes will be just as crappy.) what really impressed us on this voyage was the level of service. wow. as a disney addict, i can tell you i am used to THAT level of service. i was blown away by the sun staff. at every turn they far surpassed my expectations. in my opinion, they give disney (the industry standard) a run for their money. will we return to ncl? yes. would we return to the sun? absolutely! we found the entertainment to be wonderful. wow...the singers and dancers were so fabulous and again...on par and above that which we see with disney. cruise director candi and cruise consultant natalie could not have been more helpful and pleasant. the "front desk" people were always always pleasant, knowledgable and helpful. in all i guess i would say that people will treat you as you treat them. we observed some very unpleasant interactions on the part of fellow cruisers. it was all handled with professionalism on the part of the staff. my advice is that if you want fru fru, THIS ship is NOT for you. but if you want a GREAT experience with great service and good food, then this is for you. Cabin review: 0222

the cabin was bigger than i expected. the, pretty small, but doable. not used to this size of shower, but as a first-timer, i found it amusing. after the first two days i got used to how to move around so as not to bang into stuff.
