Spoiled Royally

Sail Date: May 2014
Destination: Bermuda
Embarkation: Bayonne (Cape Liberty)

Royal Caribbean once again exceeded our expectations. The Explorer, soon to be refurbished at the end of the summer and possibly have a new itinerary in Europe, was fabulous in general, despite her age. We had read so many reviews, it was hard to know what to expect.

We had absolutely NO problem with embarkation in Bayonne. Every member of the staff that we encountered, without exception, was courteous and solicitous. This included cabin attendants, waitstaff,

Bartenders, Concierge and Officers. They seemed genuinely motivated to making our cruise the best possible and they succeeded.

Our cabin was exactly the same as our last cruise on the "Adventure." The GS was roomy and comfortable with more than enough storage and closet space. The bathroom was spacious with a double sink and 4 drawers plus storage under the sink. My only caution might be that the shower was in a deep soaking tub that perhaps could be an issue for older people or those with mobility More problems.

We had a port side balcony and it was fun (and pretty amazing) to watch the docking process in Bermuda.

In their specialty restaurant, Portifino, everything we selected was exceptional.

As far as the MDR fare, it was fine; perhaps not 5 star quality, but you are not paying 5 star prices.

The only improvement that was needed was the quality of the food in the windjammer. Admittedly the issue there was timing as much as quality. I am not a big fan of steam table food, especially if has been sitting for more than 10 minutes, but again, this is not a luxury cruise line and you are not paying anywhere near luxury prices.

Entertainment was good on this cruise. Be sure to catch the ice show, we really enjoyed that. The bands were OK as was the piano lounge guy. It was what it was, but admittedly, we only had 5 nights and perhaps we missed some highlights. Do NOT miss Quest, it really is leave-with-your-stomach-sore-from laughing, funny.

Disembarking was relatively simple, the only glitch was the rain and I don't think RCCL has control over the weather yet, but they are probably working on it.

I believe that Royal Caribbean is exceptional in value, and this cruise did not dispute that. Less

Cabin review: Explorer of the Seas 1556

Great location (port forward.) Comfortable and roomy enough. Mirrors galore. Lovely bathroom with LOTS of storage. Deep tub with shower could be a problem for those with mobility issues, but great for those that like a good soak. Nicely done. No complaints.
