15 days on Star Princess to Hawaii
Embarkation: Los Angeles
We had the hotel/transfer package; the airport Marriott is a nice hotel and the transfer was spot on. If you dont take this package and try to do it yourself, well lots of luck. Taxi fare alone to the airport is about sixty bucks, not counting tip.
Embarkation was easy, ship had to be cleaned because of a bout with norobvirus, got on about 2:30 pm, had luggage by six. We were on Baja deck with a balcony. Room was clean and nice, cabin steward was a true gem, we tipped him big also for his hard work.
Food: some people beat this to death and nit pick any ship to death. Food at the two lido decks was ok, breakfast was pretty good, hamburgers at pool on Lido deck were really good. Main dining room was an eight out of ten, we didnt go every night, we asked for a table for two, and never had a problem. Sabbatinis and Crown Grill were a ten out of More ten. Go to Crown grill for lunch and have fish and chips; excellent!
The coffee/sandwich bar on deck five was always superb either for a quick breakfast or lunch. Servers arent surly as one reviewer babbled on about; they are extremely busy.
The mostly Filipino crew are very nice, hard working and for the most part, always quick to say hello. The Star was repositioning for Alaska after this voyage.
Pools, you dont like the main pool, well go to the back of the boat; there are two. Dont like that, go to the pool with the enclosed roof and its heated.
Gym was good, no the treadmills werent crap as someone pointed out, we went every day, everything worked and there are enough equipment to get a good workout; go after lunch not in the morning.
This ship was twice and nice as Grand Princess; that ship had leaks in the ceiling, balcony was old and tired and sliding door was shot; our cabin and balcony were excellent. Bathroom and shower are clean and nice.
Ten days at sea and four ports in Hawaii and one in Ensenada were just right for us, If you are a whiner or like to party better get on a Carnival boat because the average age on this ship is about sixty. No rock climbing or drinking contests here. We liked the Wheelhouse bar and trivia and kairioke stuff, the lecturer on ocean liners was very good. Bruce Vancill was his name i believe.
Getting off the ship was organized we were off by 9;45 and caught a cab to the airport.
I am going to give this cruise five stars. If you are apt to whine about the food, whine and cry because the guy in the bar scowled at you, or didnt like the show at the Princess theatre, maybe you better get some bucks and go on Cunard from NY to Southhampton. Maybe that gig will make you happy ;) Less
