A little background to explain the title. Our first ever cruise was to Alaska in 2007 on this ship, and we loved it enough that cruising has become the way we vacation whenever we can. This was our 8th cruise and the first time we have revisited a ship. Second time around with a 7 year gap (and the ship was refurbished some in between) was not the type of experience that would have convinced us that cruising was awesome.

Now that we have been on other ships, we know the Sun is a little down on amenities, but we knew that when we booked the trip. The ship was clean, well kept and maintained, however, it does not flow as well as newer ships. The spaces are more broken up and traffic flow in the public areas is not great.

I do suffer from sea sickness periodically on cruise ships, and found the Sun was a little more susceptible to the type of motion that causes me issues than some of the larger and newer ships I've been on in comparable seas. Admittedly part of that may have been due to the ship having a tire get stuck in the forward thruster at our first port that took divers until the last port to get out.

Cabin Review

We picked this room because it is the furthest aft one on the port side and pictures of the ship showed it had a larger than usual balcony. On that count we were not disappointed, as the balcony is a very nice size, including 2 chairs, a small table and one lounger. We spend quite a lot of time on our balcony, and there was one issue we have not experienced before (this was our 6th balcony cruise - of 8 cruises), and fairly often we would get the smell of the ship's exhaust while outside. We also had a little soot on the floor at times, and a few cigarette butts appeared during the cruise.Aside from that, the room was functional, with decent storage and everything we needed. I'm not a big fan of the shower (round with a curtain not a door) but even at 6'4 it did work fine. The TV was in a bit of an awkward spot - a flat screen in a spot not meant for one, and screwed down so you couldn't move it. It interfered with the door of the cupboard above it.Being on the deck immediately below the Great Outdoors was not perfect, but not as bad as I feared. It was quiet mostly at night as the deck above wasn't used much then. The occasional scraping of chairs was annoying particularly early in the cruise.
