Not quite enough bang for the buck...

Sail Date: April 2014
Destination: Western Caribbean
Embarkation: Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades)

Well, we just got back from the April 20th sailing of the Indy, and we were pleased with some things, and disappointed with others. I will break it down by category to hopefully make it easier.

Staff- Not consistently friendly, some were nice, others were down right RUDE, in the dining room we noticed other waiters would go all out for their patrons, ours could barely remember what we had to drink every night.

Shopping- This was very disappointing, hardly any souveniers to choose from, mainly high priced crap you can get at any shopping mall in America.

Food- Dining room food at dinner was basically good, HOWEVER they tried to pass off prime rib as filet mignon on night 2 I believe, and passed off lobster bisque using shrimp instead of lobster. Did not eat at Windjammer at all, the Promenade and Sorrentos were good places for snacks and light deserts. Being from the south, I was very disappointed they did not have sweetened ice tea, give me a break!! More

Entertainment- The ice skating show was pretty good, but didn't think it was worth all the hype it got from other reviews.

Activities- There were not many choices, and the ones they did have were always conflicting with each other, or with dinner, or with the kids club times.

Kids Club- Our son enjoyed it, a special shout out to Sharkey, she seemed to favor our son, and looked out for him.

Ports/Shore Excursions- The people that run the excursions need to get their act together, the one in GC was 30 minutes late getting started. The lady that guided the tour in Falmouth basically asked us to look after some old foreign lady that didn't speak English, like it's our freaking job to babysit. We are on vacation, we didn't come all that way and spend all that money to work as tour guides.

So, to summarize, it seems RC has gone down in quality over the years (yeah, I know, just like everything else), and it's a shame, because the ship itself is a great one, and if the staff was more consistent with a higher level of service, and if the shopping was better, and if they hired better companies to run the shore excursions, it would be worth the prices they charge. If and when we cruise again we will either consider spending more for Celebrity, or go back to slumming on Carnival and get the same level of service we got on Indy for less money. Less

Cabin review: Independence of the Seas 8536

Nice balcony cabin, but far from dining and activities

Port and Shore Excursions

Dunn's River Falls

Falls were beautiful, tour guide expected us to baby sit some foreign lady that didn't speak English, yeah, good luck with that....

Island Tour

Tour left 30 minutes late with no apology

Dragons Tail coaster was amazing, but they would not let us upgrade our ticket to unlimited use. Kids club area had little to no shade, shopping was at a bare minimum, could not get the shirt my wife wanted in her size after going to 2 different places.
