Just returned from a river cruise on the Avalon Expression. Fabulous chauffer service from home to airport and vice versa. Lovely cars and lovely chauffeurs.
Arrived at Amsterdam (large airport) but was disappointed in the meet and greet and struggled to find our guide who was slumped in his seat with his sign undetected against his chest! Finally on board coach to be told that we were going to be taken to a holding hotel for 30mins before we could be taken to the ship.
Finally on board found staff very nice, room very nice(and we were on 2nd floor with a so called panoramic view which was lovely etc. However as the cruise got flowing down the river most ports of call meant we had a lock view and many times we were tied up to other river boats so our room became more like the black hole with no light and we had to keep curtains almost permanently closed while in dock. However, we made the best of things and just had to go up on deck! Only once did we enjoy panoramic view with window back whilst flowing down the river!
On our trip it seemed that the cabins on the other side of the ship had the better views. We were told this was just luck and could change all the time. So all in all disappointed as I dreamed that we would have lovely views while sailing but not the case generally and mainly industrial sights. Hey hoy but met lots of lovely passengers and the ship was half full. ps there were only 4 Brits on the ship and the rest were from Canada, USA and Taiwan.
