My wife and I have been on 4 cruises, so we are somewhat versed in the customer service we normally receive. Breakaway was not the best ship we have been on, but it was far from the worst. I will break down the relevant portions of this review.
*Food: Overall the food was not bad. There was always plenty, it rarely arrived cold. We ate at nearly all the complementary restaurants, and one specialty, La Cucina. My biggest complaint was the bacon. I am a bacon fanatic, and will eat all kinds. Fatty, crispy, even turkey bacon. I could not eat the bacon on the Breakaway. It was slimy, cold, and bad tasting. Minor disappointment there. I was surprised to learn that not exactly the same things are served on every ship. Some of my favorites from our previous cruise, Norwegian Epic 2 years prior, were not available. Perhaps they simply rotated the menu.
*Entertainment: We saw several shows, Burn the floor, Rock of Ages, Comedy magic show, Second City, and Howl at the Moon. Burn the Floor was pretty good, but dance isn't my thing. It was surprisingly tasteful. I would have no problem taking small kids to go see that. Rock of Ages was definitely an adults only show, which stopped short of full nudity. The music wasn't bad, but there were explicit sexual references and drug references just to scratch the surface. We had enough about 3/4 of the way through and left before the end. Comedy Magic show was good. The young magician performed good tricks, some of them quite surprising. I would see that again, even if it was the same show. Second City was the most entertaining and comical thing I have seen on a cruise ship. Highly recommended. Get reservations, and arrive early. They give your seat away if you are not 10 minutes early. Its almost always a full house. Howl at the Moon was good, it's basically a request driven piano bar. There was some "Rockettes" gear for sale in the stores, and a whole channel on the TV network, making me wonder if there was a Rockettes show at one time.
We liked our cabin. We discovered a new feature to us, the power to the entire room is turned on/off by a card holder inside the door. I'm sure this is to save power, but I found it a bit of a pain. I circumvented this by placing an old hotel room key in the slot all the time so my electronics would charge while I was at dinner. Our room steward would pull it out, and the power would go out again. The cabins seem smaller than the Epic, but honestly easier to get around. The bathrooms are the biggest I have seen. But the balcony was barely big enough for the 2 chairs and tiny table. Not a lounging area at all.
