Was skeptical based on all the mixed reviews, as my husband and I spent 21 years in the Navy and have only cruised with Holland America for pleasure. We took the advice of cruise critic and brought our wine and champagne in carry-ons and paid the corkage fee. Also packed water and Coke products (can't stand Pepsi). Other than having our suitcase held until we complained (they thought there might be alcohol in it…really?), everything else was quite decent.
We had an ocean view room on the 7th deck, and other than a few partiers the first night it wasn't too noisy. We ate in the main dining rooms and found the food to be excellent, especially the salmon and poached cod. The only complaint we had was that we missed the evening buffets--would've been a nice touch to have a dessert buffet with the "White Hot" rave party. We chose not to take the tenders in for Stirrup Cay and had the pool deck pretty much to ourselves until around 3pm. Nassau was interesting with four ships inport simultaneously--we didn't make it down to Arawak like we'd thought we would, but chose to shop and then return to the ship for, yes, pool time.
The bed was extremely comfortable, seemed like a firm mattress with a pillow top. The room was nice enough, but I missed having no tub at all (shaving touch-up was interesting).
