After nearly 2 dozen various cruises on mostly upscale cruise lines, we experienced Silver Sea sailing on the Silver Wind in the Mediterranean last year. We generally cruise 1-2 times per year and we were greatly impressed with our initial Silver Sea experience, and were anxious to return to Silver Sea.
Though the Caribbean is not our usually cruise destination, we hadn't been in some time and the dates worked out for a 7 night southern Caribbean voyage on the Silver Cloud.
While many of the features that so impressed us originally with Silver Sea were the same on this cruise, there was clearly a marked decrease in service on the Silver Cloud.
Butler service on the Silver Wind was top notch, pleasant and attentive, on the Silver Cloud our butler was seldom seen, and after his initial welcome, he failed to follow through on two out of four of his offerings. Our suite attendant was excellent.
On both evenings that we dined at The Restaurant, service was very poor. Dinner service at the Grill and La Terrazza was good, and also at Le Champagne (though it seemed understaffed and the server only appeared to deliver the next course). Lunch service at the Grill was very hit or miss.
We enjoyed the ship itself and felt that the food itself was very well done. Entertainment was fine, but nothing special (nor did we really expect more).
Generally we felt that the Bar staff and Maitre D’s were pleasant, helpful and efficient. Our cruise director was also very pleasant and helpful.
Perhaps it was fortuitous that as we pondered this sailing we received a special offer in the mail which prompted us to confirm, only to be told that the offer was no longer being available (on the same date it arrived). Silver Sea did honor the promotional fare after some back and forth.
