Feb 28 thru Mar 8 cruise. Had bag searched by security and a 3" blade Swiss Army knife confiscated. It was receipted and returned at end of cruise. Apparently Baltimore port security has decide they want to be TSA of the seas. Protocol for aircraft boarding does not readily transfer to ship boarding. Aircraft staff do not give you big knives after they tale away small knife. They were also taking corkscrews and pen knives. As a retired maximum security Jail Warden I recognize a useless policy and someone who does not really know there job. What did you do pal COPY some papers from TSA playbook? Couldn't evaluate and write your own SOP's? Yes I was annoyed, also needlessly slows what was a great embarkation port. Also confiscated coke screws and pen knives, Yep none of those all over the ship. If you see someone with a machete do take action. The only thing I saw confiscated that appeared to be safety related was travel irons that I could agree with. Confiscated items are receipted and available for pick up upon return. If you don't pick up then they are gone!
Have seen varied reports on the Grandeur all over map. Having sailed multiple lines and this being our 55th cruise since 1984 we were quite happy in almost all regards with the Grandeur. We has last sailed her in 1998 and 1999. The staff was EXCELLENT in all regards. Room service slower than molasses especially considering traveling Grand Suite category. 30 to 40 minute standard wait if called in. One day 1 hr and 30 minutes and had to call to Pursers to complain. Order only coffee, pastries, and fruit. Not eggs Benedict after all. Hint use on door nigh before ordering.
Ship condition excellent though suite did leak after rough weather on return, yes 30 ft seas and 45 kt winds. Guess we had to pay for the glorious days of fun and sun in Florida and Bahamas. Our only real complaint was location of Grand Suites under pool and buffet area, quiet doe not come with these accommodations on deck 8. Toilets also had some minor problems caused by broken pipe in cold Baltimore they advised. Taken care of quickly considering and $25 onboard credit and champaign issued without asking. That's trying to keep you happy and counts!
Location noisy under pool area. Size and amenity are excellent in this suite, however due to location and lack of insulation I would not book the Grand suite category in this area!
