First Cruise Experience

Sail Date: February 2014
Destination: Western Caribbean
Embarkation: Miami

This was the first cruise for my husband and I. There was 12 people in our group. We were supposed to leave port at 4:00 but didn't leave until 8:30 p.m. There was something broken with the fresh water system and they wouldn't let us leave port until it was fixed. The staff on board for the most part were excellent. Our cabin steward checked on things several times a day and helped us with anything we needed.

The food left something to be desired. There was an okay variety, but the taste was just ordinary. I had several steaks during the sit down dinner but they were usually dry and tougher. The waiter never asked us if we wanted anything to drink besides water. The plates were always quickly cleared when we were finished and our water glasses were refilled promptly.

The room wasn't bad (although the ceiling squeaked when the ship was at full speed), The shower flooded each time we used it. The bedding was ultra soft.

We loved the photography staff. They More were always taking your pictures or setting up opportunities for pictures - they were friendly and fun to work with. The pictures themselves were over priced but turned out nice. Would have been nice if they had offered different size options.

Always felt rushed when we were off the ship - like we were always hurrying to get back to the ship. Booked excursions through the cruise and they left something to be desired.

Overall not a bad first experience. We would try a cruise with Carnival again. Less

Cabin review: Carnival Liberty 2037

Ceiling squeaked when we were at full speed (happened twice on the cruise - once when we left port late and had to make up time and then once again when there was a medical emergency on board and we had to get to the next island quickly). The shower flooded everytime we used it. Our cabin steward was awesome - very attentive. Bedding was soft and comfy.

Port and Shore Excursions

Canopy Zipline

Took forever to get off the ship then had to endure a 30 minute ferry ride to Belize City.

During the tour of the city, we were quite surprised with the dirtiness of the city. There was trash everywhere. There were empty lots full of trash. Very disappointing.

Took over an hour to get to the zip line and cave tubing sites. Stopped at a small rest area before getting to the sites to use the bathroom.

Staff at both adventures were very nice and very accommodating. When we finished we stopped back at the same rest area where we were fed a native meal and free rum punch - both were yummy.

Once again we were rushed by the time we got back to the dock - less then 20 minutes to shop around before we had to catch the last ferry back to the ship.

Mayan Ruins

The boat to go to Playa De Carmen was late leaving the dock. Got to Playa De Carmen and got on a bus. About 1/2 hour into the ride we stopped at a rest stop. The tour guide stated that the bathrooms at the ruins were not good so we were stopping here for better bathrooms. Turned out to be a tourist trap for 45 minutes. There was a gift shop there. The bathrooms weren't bad. Ultimately 13 buses all stopped there at the same time so it got quite crowded. When we finally got to the ruins, my husband checked out the bathrooms and it turned that they were not that bad.

The ruins were beautiful - they had actually changed since I was there in 2000. There were new pathways and green grass and more trees. Turned out they actually rebuilt some of the fallen ruins. There was a Mayan Market at the entrance to the ruins. Able to negotiate prices.

Very rushed when we got back to the dock to get on the cruise since everything was running late from the delayed departure.

When we spoke to the people on the cruise ship about our disappointment, they were not very accomodating to listen to us.

Very pretty.

Went to a private beach and did some snorkeling. Then went back to the port to do some shopping.

Beach Day

West Bay Tours was absolutely amazing - Marco was our tour guide. Very informative and personable. He would stop along the way and offer us tidbits of information about island life. We would even pull of the road for longer stories or to let us take pictures. He stopped at a local market so we could do some shopping with the locals.

Took us to a semi private beach where we paid a small fee to use the facilities offered - the one down fall to this area was that the locals bothered us constantly offering to sell us their wares. Did book with a local to take us snorkeling.

Awesome experience - this turned out to be our favorite stop.
