This was our 8th cruise, 3rd Asian, 3rd cruise with Royal Caribbean and 2nd aboard Mariner of the Seas.
Up front I would like to note that we were very disappointed with the removal of pubs in the Royal Promenade and replaced with high end expensive shops obviously aimed for the Asian market.
Was also sorry to see that the roof of the Greek style pool room was removed and open to the Sun.
Also disgusting was the continual smell of cigarette smoke drifting up from the casino, the continually clearing of throats and spitting - there should be signs to declare that spitting is not allowed!
Also, we were sick of the pushing and shoving and people pushing in when ques were required.
It felt like the cruise was only for Asians but we were allowed to come along for Embarkation was a smooth and painless process- very happy with that one!
Ports of call Bangkok and Ho Chi Min city were fantastic and the people we met were lovely and made the trip all the better.
Our balcony room was great but would have preferred a double bed rather than 2 single beds and our room attendant Erick was very helpful and really nice.
Chriz the bartender at the Sky bar at the pool was fantastic, very professional and Always engaging and helpful.
The staff at shore excursions were clueless on any advice about the ports, there was no maps or any information- only on other ports that the ship previously visits and we had to que up to get our tickets for the shore excursion in Vietnam and we have NEVER had to do this on any other cruise! The lady didn't listen to what I was asking and blamed our room attendant for not handing us our tickets! Never apologised either for the stuff up and then promptly opened the draw and handed us the tickets! How could our attendant know about our proposed trip if they still had the tickets - liars.
We were travelling with my mother and stepfather and had arranged with our travel agent ( whom we have known personally for over 20 yrs) to sit together for dining at the first seating. Someone screwed up and we ended up in different restaurants!
At the pursers desk, the fellow in charge ( and I am very sorry that I didn't get his name), was extremely rude and basically said that our travel agent stuffed up! He said he could not help us and we had to take it up at the restaurant! We sorted this issue out ourselves and the dining experience was Okay. The desserts were fantastic ( I don't normally eat desserts) but the menus didn't change much daily, which was very disappointing.
The trip on this ship was such a big change from the last one to the Caribbean in 2008, as the staff on that cruise were American or were from the Caribbean Islands and knew how to treat passengers and the whole buzz that was sadly absent from this one.
We will NEVER go on another Asian cruise. We spoke with other Aussies that had previously travelled with Royal Caribbean on this cruise and they all agreed with our observations.
We want to cruise the Panama Canale and Europe but we are unsure if we will cruise with Royal Caribbean again.
