Sail Date: Feb 2014

We sailed the Getaway’s Feb 15th 2014 seven night sailing. We are a couple mid to late 50’s. We have over 50 cruises done. It was the best cruise we have had recently and we just did the Allure of the Seas last May, which was good, but the Getaway has it all! I understand the itinerary is the same for the next couple years; Miami, two(2) sea days, St. Thomas, St. Maarten, another sea day then finally Nassau. Super itinerary with beautiful beaches, shopping and diversity of excursions at every stop. The ship surpasses Holland America and Princess whom we have often sailed on. We did take the following extra’s which really enhanced our cruising experience. The specialty dinning package ($119 each), the thermal pool package ($200 each) and finally the all-inclusive drink package ($350 each). The ship had a unique 8th floor with extremely wide patio/boardwalk that wraps around the ship except at the bow. It had a shaded awning for a large portion of it with pub style bars and outside dining for several of the restaurants. One night we ate at the Italian restaurant in their outside patio and it was perfect. Covered patio with grape vines on the ceiling, Italian ambiance with ocean view and sounds. Once seated, they bring out rolls and bread and four containers of different flavoured oils to dip bread in. Really good!

On most of the other ships we have been on, there is a deck (usually 7th or 8th floor) that is for walking/running around. On the Getaway there was the 8th floor but as it wasn’t extended around completely at the bow, we had to change direction and walk back the other way continuously. As we enjoy an hour’s walk each day, we found this to be a flaw with the ship’s design. There is a running track at the top of the ship which we tried to walk around about 12 noon one day but were unable to as all the deck chairs were pulled into the track by the sun tanners and the floor was wet and slippery. There is a very good gym with tons of equipment but we like to walk looking at the ocean when we can.

The ship has a comedy club with a couple shows most nights plus many other evening venues. We could not squeeze all the shows in a week. One of the highlights was a full fireworks display one evening- super job. There is also a large Vegas style casino, bingo and game shows. Also a lounge that offers jazz and karaoke. One thing we wanted to do but didn’t get a chance was the Ice Bar. It is $20 to get in but you get 2 cocktail drinks once inside. You have to put on parkas before going in and everything inside is made of ice. I think you can stay up to an hour. We saw some people coming out looking like they had a great time.

Cabin Review

Bed is next to window. Although balcony is small like most others on the ship there is an illusion of it being bigger because there is an extra 2 feet extention beyond the glass. There also is a twenty foot shade awning extending out that covers the boardwalk area on the floor below.
