Have cruised on two other Holland ships, before Carnival took over, with no issues. Things have defintely changed for the worse.
This ship has so many issues, its hard to know where to start.
Cruise was to Panama in October. We were on the 8th floor, back of ship, balcony, right in the very middle. Perfect room for going through the canal. GREAT view! The worst room however, when it came to air conditioning!!! Every night the room was well over 80 degrees. Had the crew come twice to check the temperature with a temp. gauge and both times was told, yeah, its hot in here. They offered to move us down to the 3rd or 4th floor!!! WE PAID MORE for that higher room, & they wanted to downgrade us!!!! We had others in our group in the same area, same floor and same air conditioning problems. Others in our group at the front of the ship said they were freezing!!! HMmmmm...the casino is where all the air conditioning was!!! Imagine that.
-The high dollar mixed drinks....were MINUS THE ALCOHOL, every single time, except the one time where we deliberately sat at the bar to watch it being made.
-This ship was supposedly just in dry dock for renovations....so we figured it would be virtually new. Oh boy, we couldn't have been more wrong. Dirty, worn out chair in our room, and the same in some of the lounge areas. Dirty chair covers at the formal dinner. Carpeting was worn out too in some areas.
-Sewage smells were common in a couple different areas. You literally have to run through the area to get past it. It was really BAD!!! And how safe is it to smell those gases??? It's NOT safe. How they get away with this is beyond me. Its a health hazard.
-The crew staff were not very friendly or helpful. It became obvious that they've heard all these complaints too many times, and many times they just turned around if you started to say something negative.
-This list of issues could go on, but I'll spare you the pain of reading it :-)
-We booked this cruise through a travel agency. and as soon as we returned home, I went straight to them to let them know of all the problems. The agent sent a letter to their Holland rep. Was told it would be up to 60 days before they could get back to us. I was livid at that!!! That was in October 2013. Well here it is, February 2014 and we finally got a response from Holland, after numerous reminders to them, but ONLY after asking for contact information for the Holland CEO (or Carnival). In a nutshell, they can not give us anything more than the $200 on board credit and the 5 beers in a bucket they already gave us. BUT, if we take another trip with them they'll give us a $25 beverage card, and $200 for each person, and a ....GET THIS....A KEEPSAKE HOLLAND AMERICA COMMUTER MUG!!!!! LOL!!!!! We spent some $6,000.00 on this cruise & things we purchased on board, not including flights. And this is the first time I have ever complained about a cruise, just so the reader knows. No Thanks Holland....I would rather enjoy my cruises....I'll stick with RCCL in the future!!!!
