Fun cruise on Epic. But not without a few hiccups.
Just got home from a 7 night Caribbean on Epic. A few thoughts while it is fresh in my mind. First things first, I just don't get all the whining. Was the cruise perfect? No. Was it fun? Absolutely. Room for improvement? Absolutely. Some people have expectations that are just not realistic. This is a large boat and of course there will be some inconsistencies in service etc. But for less than $100 per night I think you need to temper expectations.
Embarkation/Disembarkation - This was a little frustrating as there were long lines and communication could have been better. Public announcements were made that were barely legible. But all in all I was on and off the boat fairly quickly.
Cabin - I booked a studio room for one and was quite impressed. The room is smaller than a standard inside but well laid out. Carpets and linens starting to show age. The lounge area was great with the bar, food and coffee machine. The person in charge of working with the solo cruisers More was okay. Some very nice people. I did seem to notice that the solo cabins have been used by families looking for a room for a parent or adult aged kids. They also seem to be quite popular in the gay community.
Dining - Garden Cafe was good. Food on buffet was fresh and plentiful. Always lots of fresh fruit. And many other choices as well. The pub was decent. Taste, one of the included dining rooms was good. Prime rib was tasty. Service was a little uneven. Moderno, Cagney's and the sushi place were all very good.
Entertainment - Blue Man Group was okay. The show dragged a little. The Legends in Concert was good too. The dancers were very talented and the choreography was quite good. The Cirque Dreams show was very good too. The dinner was a little disappointing. Duelling pianos was a hoot. Second City was decent too. All in all the entertainment was above par for a mass cruise line.
I did notice that Epic seems to move around quite a bit. I wondered if this was a design issue. The boat was laid out in a manner that was counter intuitive. Lido buffet forward etc. It took a few days to get bow and stern sorted out. The ship lacks mid ship stairs and elevators which can lead to some congestion. I used the stairs most of the time. The gym was very good. Lots of free weights and machines all in good shape. Less

Cabin review: Norwegian Epic 11517
Studios are great cabins for solo travellers. I was a little concerned with an inside but it was fine. Shower is a little tight. The lounge was great to have a coffee machine, bar and food close at hand.
