Our First NCL Cruise

Sail Date: December 2013
Destination: Bahamas
Embarkation: New York (Manhattan)

This was our first and LAST Ncl cruise.

We have cruised with Carnival Cruise lines and have always been pleased. We decided to Cruise NCL for the first time, with the thought that this would be a more “refined….well put together “ cruise. Rather then the “FUNSHIPS” of carnival. I will take Funship any day .

We left out of NYC. The port and boarding experience went well. We were disappointed when we got to the room. We had a balcony and 4 people in the room. The room we found was smaller then carnival and lat only 1/3 of the closet space other ships have. The room needs more closet space. The bathroom was well put together, roomy and a nice size shower. The bathrooms we did find took on a urine smell quickly, that we found thru out the ship. Toilet design was not done well.

We found that this ship has NO wow factor. There are no grand foyers or staircases that hit us when we entered.

Seating was an issue as well. The More ships designed to keep you moving. There is very limited seating in the bars …lounges and exterior. So trying to find a table or a cozy chair to sit and read or play cards was impossible.

As for wheelchair access ….very poor. The walkways thru the ships are narrow and around “Shakers Bar” almost impassable.

The bars were small and became overcrowded quickly when they hosted an event. We enjoy playing “Name that tune” They planned the game to follow The MARTINI Tasting at Shakers Bar. So when their martini tasting was done at 245 ….at 3 was name that tune. No one left the bar and they were all drunk from drinking 16 martinis. So, the game we played was a bust All the drunks kept their seats and yelled out the answers and acted rudely .

As for the dining ….we had a party of 13…..and service was horrid. We made reservations for the Manhattan Room. We were seated at 2 different tables and served at different times. The server was rude and seemed very put out he was there. Over the 7 nights we only had ONE server who was pleasant and introduced herself and was a doll. We generously tipped her at the end of our 3.25 hours dinner (LONG Dinners Ugh). We told the Head Waiter that she was wonderful and he commented how she was the MOST requested wait staff … Does THAT tell you something??

The food we found …OK . No wow factor at all. There were 5 paid restaurants on the ship.….its as if they keep their main seating menu boring so by day 5 you are looking for something better quality.

There was NO Surf and Turf at the main dining rooms. They did serve lobster at the buffet the “Dress Up” Night. So sadly after we sat for 3 hours waiting for our bland food….we had to go to the buffet to get lobster ….while we were dressed in tuxedos and gowns and the rest of the room was in t shirts and flip flops.

The staff was NOT over friendly….and didn’t go out of their way for you.

We were married the day before …had a party of 13 and no on made us feel special.

We enjoyed the shows …the seats were comfortable in the theater.

The menu was limited at the 24 hr restaurant. Room Service was slow and also did not deliver items . Our orders were LOST multiple times. The apology was ok the FIRST time they forgot our order. By the 4th time …no apology can be accepted.

Leaving the ship was not a big problem . There was a delay at the terminal….we left the ship at 10….which is rather late sine you are out of your room at 730.

I am not a fan of FREESTYLE after this. There were people in gowns and also. in shorts and flip flops. Since we were a large party we needed reservations days in advance anyway. So Freestyle does NOT benefit LARGE parties.

I would NOT go on another NCL cruise. Sadly we had a mediocre honeymoon  In NO did we feel special on this cruise.

Save your money and go on a different line. We are avid cruisers and will never do NCL again Less
