Sail Date: May 2013

We were sailing as part of large party including family members. I must say that the island of Bermuda is truly a beautiful place, especially in the springtime. The pink sand beaches were among the best we've experienced in our travels and the towns visited were as modern as any. Our experience on the Celebrity Summit however left much to be desired. We understand that the ship is about 13 years old at the present time. We've previously sailed at that ship to the Eastern Caribbean in 2003 and to Alaska in 2005. Both voyages were excellent. But Celebrity has apparently allowed their Millennium class ships to go into a state of mismanagement and disrepair.

Many of the public areas were not cleaned properly, many of the large windows throughout the ship looked like they had not been cleaned in long time, both inside and out. Public areas looked messy, with trash not picked up at times. The Oceanview Bar on the back of the 10th deck was in an absolute state of disrepair, with the tables and chairs worn out from years of exposure to salt air. It's a shame, because that public space is one of the best spots on these ship. The cardio equipment in the fitness area was very worn out and creaky. The service on the ship itself was apathetic, with the exception being the pay restaurants and one of our servers in the regular dining room. Throughout the ship, whether at the shops, the buffet line, the front desk or the bars, most of the service was basic to outright unresponsive. Same went for the room steward, who wasn't very helpful overall throughout our stay in terms of responsiveness and did not clean the room adequately. The bathroom was filled with mildew and the shower drain was not working properly throughout the entire stay. We had bedsheets with uncleaned stains on them, the towels were not replenished at times.

All of these problems are not as a result of the age of the ship, it is due to a lack of adequate managerial controls. Many of these issues are not capital intensive to fix, all it requires is an attention to detail and process. That seems to be something that Celebrity has lost sight of. Given that there are many other options to choose from in the cruise industry, many of whom still have a focus on good service and competitive pricing, I will no longer be sailing with Celebrity Cruises after this experience.
