Beautiful Ship, Several Design Flaws

Sail Date: November 2013
Destination: Eastern Caribbean
Embarkation: Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades)

Royal Princess is an impressive ship! The Piazza is one of the most impressive spaces I've ever seen at sea. The designers made sure to make a statement with the focal point of the ship.

The spa was located on the deck 5 which seemed a little out of place. The Enclave had very nice features including two steam rooms of different temperatures, heated loungers, waterbeds, a dry sauna, and a theraputic pool.

The Sea Walk was a unique experience and fun to walk through at different times to experience the effects.

The elevators on the ship were a joke. For a ship this size, there should have been more. It was not uncommon to wait 5 minutes or more, especially at peak times like dinner or after shows. To add to the stress on the elevators, there is no central staircase (except for the 3 decks of the Piazza) so there was no other option, even if you were only going one floor.

Another major disappointment was the size of the balcony. We were in a More mini-suite, and the balcony was barely 4' deep at 36 square feet. While we knew the square footage going in, what highlited the size was the fact that they had two full size chair with footstools stored under them along with a round table. We tried to use the footstools with the chairs, and there was no physical way to use them without taking the table into the cabin. And to do that, the chairs would had to been facing the balcony next door, not facing outward to the sea.

The theatre was beautiful and very well appointed. The shows were also very good. They only complaint here is that the ship has a virtual background, a huge video screen, behind the stage. They relied too heavily on the technoligy which distracted from the shows rather than enhancing them.

My final criticism is about a very foul smell that was present on the basketball court frequently. We were with a large group that had events in that area, and the smell was overwhelming at times. It was either sewage that was not being properly vented or remnents of trash being incinerated. Either way, I hope they find the source and correct it.

Though I focused on several bad experiences, overall we did love the ship and would cruise on Royal Princess again. Being a new ship, hopefully they will be able to address these issues quickly. The crew was amazing as we have found on all Princess cruises. Less
