My wife and I traveled on our 4th cruise together and left the kids at home. It was a relaxing 10 days and we enjoyed our trip. We flew into Fort Lauderdale and took a taxi to Miami - mistake...very expensive. Find a shuttle. We always arrive a day early and Miami was fun the day before. Enjoyed south beach.
Embarkation was easy. Arrived at noonish and were on board by one or so. Excellent curbside service with bags.
The sun is a small ship which is nice in many respects. No large crowds and it really offered everything we needed. We spent all our time on either the 6th floor or top/pool decks.
Our cabin was on the promenade -6th deck. There were only 10 cabins in our hall and rarely saw anyone but our steward and it was quiet and convenient. Only the shower was tight and hard to get shampoo and soap from dispenser. We would recommend bringing own shampoo and if you need conditioner, bring it. Storage wasn't and issue.
Our steward was just okay. Pleasant but nothing exceptional. We wondered if better ones were in higher category cabins. Loved the animal towel formations nightly.
We loved the cruise director and staff. They treated us very we'll and we're fun, pleasant, and attentive.
The entertainment was mostly good. Enjoyed the ship dancers and singers, the comedian, and most shows. The nightly game shows between auditorium shows were fun too.
The food was just okay. We ate most everywhere. The buffet was typical. The dining rooms were repetitive, but fine. The specialty restaurants were very good, but cost more. The staff at the teppanyaki (hibachi) was fantastic.
There was smoking on parts of the ship which we could've done without, but not terrible.
We enjoyed an officers dinner...sign up at main desk by noon the 2nd day to get into lottery.
If you like quiet time, observation lounge is a great spot and the deck in front of it was mostly empty.
All in all we were treated well and enjoyed our time. We've had better, but we weren't disappointed.
Although we left the kids at home there were 80 kids on the ship, but you wouldn't know it. All we'll behaved and taken care of. We met couples who loved the care their kids had in the kids clubs. They have a separate pool for little ones.
Freestyle eating is fine. I prefer the traditional, but didn't affect us much.
It was easy to meet other couples and I think the cruise is what you make of it. We met some fun couples and had dinners and excursions with them...
We chose this cruise based on the islands...and they were wonderful...highly recommend them.
We will do ncl again. Heard a few that won't. Complaints were the older smaller ship...and darkness of everything. It was inside due to lay out, but top decks were good.
We put down a $250 deposit for the next one and got $100 credit on this cruise...so we are going again, this time with kids...
We joined a catamaran tour and were treated well. We did two snorkeling sites...one with the turtles which was fun. Also treated to lunch and all you could eat and drink. Just a nice day other than our only rainy day...but didn't ruin it.
Our favorite island. We took a popular tour you will find on recommended sites. We were treated well with snorkeling, swimming into a waterfall and then hiking to the hot springs. Views were great. The snorkeling was very good. We were broken into groups of 8, so it worked well. W
We tried to do the island on our own. We were hassled by MANY cab drivers and guides. You can walk to town, but have to get past all the pushy people. We did negotiate a good price for a one hour tour, but were always taken to tourist spots and hassled again by many vendors...I would recommend booking a tour than venturing out on your own.
We did finally take a BUS with the locals to soufire which was CHEAP, but a long drive. There we walked 10 min to the gardens and waterfall and then walk and BUS back to ship. All that cost less than $10 each, but took some research and patience and asking locals for assistance. It worked, but wouldn't be for everyone. The buses are on no time schedule and leave when FULL...in a pinch pay the extra $2-$4 for the vacant seat.
It was fun to travel as a local, but depends on your sense of adventure.
I arranged a private tour and got 3 other couple to join from these message boards and it worked out very well. We arranged a great guide that was recommended in here and she was wonderful. We toured the island at our own pace. We were never stopped at tourist traps and high pressure sales areas. We enjoyed the beach, the city for a quick lunch, and other sites. We odd stop at maho to see the planes, too. I enjoyed it, but read up on it first...were some issues on other tours.
Small beach only a $2-$3 ride away from our ships spot...but there are two docks.
The only port that had multiple ships in port with ours. Glad we went early in the season. St Thomas can host 6 ships a day...
We got off the ship and went to the taxi station and observed. We grabbed and open air 'van' for a 2-3 hour tour of the sights. It was a decent tour and hit the highlights. He dropped us off at the be each at the end and we spent the rest of the time just relaxing.
