Good first cruise

Sail Date: October 2013
Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean
Embarkation: Barcelona

We had 2 Grand Suites. 1552 and 1554. 1554 was a little closer to the centrum but much noisier. You could hear the activities and music day and up to about 11 at night. During the night it was quiet until about 3 am when they started to clean deck 10 and drag the chairs about. I used ear plugs but for noise reasons wouldn't book 1554 again. Parents in 1552 rarely heard the centrum but had the same problem with deck 10. Great steward Agust.

Conciege Maria fantastic man and the bar person Priscilla great fun and served good drinks including some cocktails in the evening. Not a very busy lounge but we enjoyed a couple of hours there every night.

Food. Windjammer not so good. Lots of food, poor quality canteen type. Food rarely warm and often difficult to find somewhere to sit. Why no trays and why awful plastic/melamine plates and sometimes plastic cutlery when they ran out. After a couple of visits we avoided the place. Main dining room very good both at night and on More sea days at lunch. Service was very good but the waiters are very busy. We ate most lunches in port and breakfast either in the room or concierge lounge.

Ate at Chefs table which was a very good experience and at both Giovanni's and chops which were excellent. We had the wine package and had no problems getting our wine at any restaurant. Izumi ok only and wouldn't bother again.

We both got sick and had to visit the medical centre. Russian Dr, very hard to understand and with no knowledge of my condition. After a drip, 2 naso gastric tubes and various drugs which I had to ask for and 6 hours later the condition improved. $700. My husband had sinus and conjunctivitis and saw an Indian Dr who gave drops and ABs. $300. Insurance will hopefully cover. Not sure where the Drs were certified. I am in the profession and didn't really feel confident in them but could ask for what we needed.

Ports good but nothing much to see in Ravenna. Rained heavily in Cannes. We used a company called Smart Cruise tours in La Spezia and Civittavechia who provided drivers and vans to take the 4 of us to Florence and Rome. Very good price and service. Other ports we did on our own. Venice very easy to get public transport. Dubrovnik .. You need to get the transfers to the old town as the ship docks about 10 mins drive away. No taxis.

Not into shows or activities much but attended a magician/comedian who was very good and heard a lot of the centrum bands ( while in the suite).

We will travel with RCI again but only on port intensive cruises as we found 3 sea days too much. Will stick with Grand Suites and avoid the Windjammer. Excellent staff and service.

We have a Quark expiation cruise booked for next July to the Arctic to try a different type of cruise. However for a multi generational holiday, ages 40 to 85 a main cruise line is really the way to go. Less
