We selected the Breakaway prior to its maiden voyage since we had never cruised on a new ship, or spent more than 6 hours in Bermuda. After reading several reviews and blogs regarding the first few cruises by the Breakaway I was becoming apprehensive regarding service, waiting for seating in the complimentary dining rooms, rough seas, quality of food, etc. To sum up our experience, our fears were nonexistent.
Our embarkation was easy (even the trip into the city and unloading at the curb). Our bags were delivered in a timely manner. Our cabin steward greeted us by name and immediately procured us a chaise lounge for our balcony. We had chosen the M6 mini suite since several reviews identified this class as having a large balcony. Being toward the front of the ship I was concerned about the rough seas and movement we might encounter in the forward section, but we had smooth sailing for all 7 days (thank goodness). I might mention that on a previous Celebrity Cruise to Bermuda we encountered a tropical storm with high waves and lots of smashing of dishes,(estimated by the kitchen staff as over 10,000 dishes broken) therefore I didn't want to revisit that episode. Our room was very nice with a much larger than a average bathroom with the shower that has several water jets along with the overhead waterfall shower head, large sink and other conveniences. The room was adequate and the hvac very responsive and efficient. My one complaint would be the TV programming or lack thereof. It would be nice to have some U.S. networks since todays electronic advances make it easily available.
On a personal note, the Broadway show Rock Of Ages was a little to much for us. It was well done, but the subject matter would not have been of our choosing.
That aside, the balance of the shows were great. Fire and Ice was outstanding, Second City lived up to their reputation, Cirque Dreams was wonderful as well as Burn the floor. We enjoyed Howl at the Moon dueling piano several times, and we missed Slam Allen since he left the ship the previous week.
We did many of the dining options as possible. The Manhattan room with the dinner music was lovely but we equally enjoyed dining in Savor and Taste. All of our servers were efficient and very personable with one or two exceptions. We did two speciality restaurants, Cagney's and the french restaurant LeBristo. Cagney's was good not great, although our server Janis made the evening. She was engaging, fun and efficient. We were celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary during the cruise and my sister, who traveled with us, purchased a cake and Janis made the presentation memorable. In the french restaurant our server Denzil was outstanding. The meal was the best of the trip. Well worth the few additional dollars.
Once docked in Bermuda the passengers were free to come and go as they pleased. This made it easy to schedule our times coming and going with very little congestion. I don't like using the ships excursions and try to find my own. We were extremely fortunate to have been given the name of a tour guide who we hired. He was absolutely wonderful. He owns a company called Charlie's Taxi Service. His name Greg Smith & his cell phone number is 441-335-1648. A lifelong Bermudian and a blue flag tour guide he did a fantastic job.
We tried to visit all the lounges and restaurants our budget could afford and enjoyed them all. Even the buffet on deck 15 was very well cone and comfortable, even during the busy times.
In conclusion, we had a wonderful cruise and would suggest that anyone with concerns should find out for themselves.
