Disappointment with Holland America

Sail Date: September 2013
Destination: Transatlantic
Embarkation: Amsterdam

My wife and myself have cruised with numerous other cruise lines and this was our first with Holland American and probably the last. The Captain of the Eurodam was probably the most interactive Captain that were have ever sailed with. We were very impressed with the dining room steward, room steward, and the selection of food. That's about all the positives that I can give this cruise!

Photo Department: Picture were vastly over priced, compared to the other cruise lines. My wife usually spends a lot of money on photos, but this cruise we spent ZERO dollars. You could purchase packages with digital disk, but if anyone not in your cabin was in the picture, it could not be included in the disk.

Shore Excursions: Purchased shore excursion in Halifax called Peggy's Cove and Hop-on Hop-off bus. Loading the buses to Peggy's Cove was very unorganized! Returning to Halifax the buses were suppose to stop every 30 minutes at each site, which did not happen. Waited at one stop More with 12 other cruisers for a hour and when the bus arrived it was full. Time is limited in each city and waiting for buses is not a fun visit.

Entertainment: Half the days in this cruise were sea days, with very little activity during the day time. Half the show in the main showroom were excellent, and half were seriously lacking. Crew members did some shows at 11 PM, which might have been good shows if you wanted to stay up all night to watch.

Disembarking: If you purchased a post-hotel stay, you were the last to disembark the ship. Less

Cabin review: Eurodam Deluxe Verandah Oceanview Upper Promenade 7012

Transatlantic cruise is not a cruise that's good for a balcony. Opening a balcony door was usually met with 40 to 50 mph winds. The room was comparable to every other cruise line, nothing more special, even those Holland American is suppose to be a more upper end cruise line. Noise would be what you expect in a Motel / Hotel.

Port and Shore Excursions

Very good port of call.

Bus Tour

City has some real gems, but getting to them is a real problem if you use the Hop-on Hop-off buses. The buses that are suppose to run every 30 minutes, ran about every hour and were full at some stop and you could not board them. Most sites are within walking distance of the cruise piers and would be more enjoyable than waiting for buses.

Peggy's Cove

Beautiful place to visit. Time was cut short by unorganized loading of the buses by tour operators. It's a place to put on a bucket list

Very friendly city. Everyone we came in contact with were very nice and helpful. The jewel of this city is their central fire station. The Firefighters were interactive with visitors, and there's a fire museum on the second floor. There's alot of pubs in the city and some famous ones if that's your thing. There's a few tourist shops, but not as many as expected for a tourist port.
