Not so fun for everyone

Sail Date: July 2013
Destination: Western Caribbean
Embarkation: Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades)

Overall we enjoyed ourselves and now think that cruises are something we want to continue. We are inclined after this cruise to look at options other than Carnival. It seems like they try to cut corners on many things. We have friends who regularly cruise other providers and they were aghast at some of the negative things listed below.

Positives

Best cabin steward ever! *****+++++

Nice roomy cabin

Excellent service and good food in Chic restaurant

Excellent photography- people and product

Helpful Guest Services desk

Smooth embarkation and debarkation process

Luggage Express option is a dream

Fun Excursions-

Grand Cayman/Land and Sea Tour****, Jamaica/Mystic Mountain*****++

Negatives

Cabin was always too warm. Heard this from many others and have read it in many reviews.

The big musical entertainment was horrible. The production values of the sets and costumes was More excellent and the sound was very well done. The performers and the material they were forced to perform in that style was horrific. The Beatles show was particularly dreadful.

Bottomless Bubbles Beverage Package

We purchased this thinking we would have unlimited access to soda. In reality the server staff would not do refills and bartenders would only fill when there were no 'paying' customers. I cannot have caffeine and more than once we saw the bartender pour the remainder of a caffeine drink into the glass and then filled the rest with the caffeine free drink. We ended up stocking soda at all of the ports. We would not purchase this again. The other related issues were-

-only refills were at the bars (others have self-serve stations controlled by chips in cups)

-small glasses only

-more ice than soda

Buffet Staff

Staff in the buffet area were not very helpful. Lots of eye rolling at guests. They mostly just cleared tables. They all looked very unhappy. Uniformed staff passed through but they were always on their phones so no one felt that they could approach them.

Buffet Areas

Some of the booth seats were loose and some had very worn upholstery. The floors were often wet and slippery. Some walls were dirty. The Tandoor, Burger and Mongolian buffets were very good and fresh. The Good Eats buffets were hit or miss. Sometimes they were good and sometimes not.

Smoking

There were a lot of smoking areas and many were adjacent to or crossed into non-smoking areas. Or had to be crossed to get to non-smoking areas.

Noise

It seemed like most of the common areas had loud music most of the time. I like loud music at times but we felt bombarded. We felt that way every time we walked through the ship. We avoided the stores and other areas due to the noise. We couldn't hear movies over drunken groups of people at pool. Less

Cabin review: Carnival Freedom Balcony Empress

Cabin was nice and had plenty of room. Plenty of storage. Thin walls made for loud noises at all hours.

Port and Shore Excursions

Island Tour

(5)

Nice tour. Enjoyed the Tortuga place and finally made it to Hell. The submarine ride was interesting and enjoyable. Only negative was fellow travelers disappearing and delaying departures from the stops. That made us miss walking around and shopping near the port because we were running late.

It was fine. Crowded. Long waits in some restaurants. Could have skipped it.

One of our favorite days after years of traveling. Rode the chairlift several times with breathtaking views and a great look at the jungle below. Enjoyed the nature museum and trail. Bobsled was fun. Nicest people we have met in all of our travels. We hope to go back here someday.
