Easy to walk into town. Don't miss the Old quarter. Squid lovely here and I am particularly partial to the nougat. Took the Kalypso glass bottom boat from the harbour for a one hour trip. Included a sealion show. Poor creatures confined in a tiny area. This part was not for me but everyone else enjoyed it.
You will need Kunas if you want to eat or drink in Dubrovnik. You can get into the old city by bus from just outside the port. Buy your return ticket from the newsagent. This is the only place we found we could use Euros. Get to the cable car as early as possible as it gets busy as more cruisers arrive. Buy your ticket from one of the sales points in the city wall where you exit to go to the cable car station- it will save time. There is a small war museum at the top. We took city walls walk on our last visit. Enjoyable and exhausting. Not to be recommended on the hottest days.
There are many short boat trips from the harbour and the city is worth seeing from the sea.
Not enough English speakers so we went on the French coach. Did not understand the commentary on the coach. Best cave system we have ever visited. Around 1500 meters by boat. Watch your head! Not suitable if you are unable to bend double while sitting in the boat as the stalactites come very low. Seriously.
Wonderful old city. Took the open top bus around the bay. Buy your ticket before boarding the stick with the seller while you wait. They overbook. We were held up for 15 minutes until 5 people could be persuaded to leave as they had not got seats. Saw Roman mosaics on a 10 minute stop but when the bus stopped for 30 minutes at Perast everyone refused to get off in fear we would not be able to get back on due to the overbooking. Keep your eyes open for a Golden Eagle. Common around the bay.
My favourite city. Easy to navigate with a guide book. Buy a 12 hour ticket for the water taxis @ 18 Euro. If you have time in Venice after leaving the ship there is a left luggage office open until 9pm in Piazzale Roma. Get to and from the ship on the 'People mover' for 1 euro.
It can be VERY expensive to eat, drink or buy an ice cream. It is cheaper away from the Grand canal. Get to the often overlooked little sister of the more famous island of Murano called Burano. Very pretty but allow 45 minutes each way.
