We travelled with two other couples who, like us, enjoy participating in activities on board. On all the other cruises we have been on there have been many opportunities to dance to the live music of various bands and vocalists. We particularly enjoy Rock n Roll, Jive and Cha Cha, although also dance some ballroom. Unfortunately this was difficult to do on Eurodam. The entertainment was more suited to those who like to sit back and relax, enjoying the music from what were quality performers. The best dance music was from Dianne in the Piano bar who was great - playing what the audience wanted, including some great dance music. Unfortunately with only carpet to dance on and very limited space due to her well earned popularity amongst those on board we could not make best use of her wide ranging talents.
Other entertainers on board had been told to provide a certain type of music and this they did and did well, but it was not suitable for those who love to dance. There were next to no other active things to do on the sea days. So if you like activity and interaction with the entertainment crew then this ship is not for you. However for those who want to relax then this may be to your taste.
Otherwise I would rate the ship reasonably well. The food was varied and plentiful, as you come to expect on cruise ships, although I would rate Celebrity and MSC better. We had initial problems with the wine service (the wine did not arrive until the main course was virtually finished but after we brought this to their attention, to their credit the service improved dramatically). And we enjoyed their wine selections.
We had an outside verandah suite directly under the Lido Deck (swimming pool area). In general this was not a concern as we were out of the cabin when the Lido Deck was busy. When chairs and other things are dragged or dropped on the deck the noise carried through to the cabin. It was only after feature evenings on the Lido Deck did the noise become annoying with furniture etc being dragged around for an hour or so after midnight and also starting very early in the morning.
As for the ports of call - well, we had not been to the Baltic before and thoroughly enjoyed each port. However the ship appeared to leave most ports earlier than necessary as on most occasions the ship left late afternoon when an evening departure would still have allowed enough time to reach the next port at dawn. Maybe the cruise line is saving on port charges at the expense of those who like to spend more time in port as the ship speed between some ports was only around 15 knots when it was more than capable of cruising at 20 knots or more????
The visit to Stockholm was particularly disappointing as we berthed at Nynashamn which is an hour by train from Stockholm. Add to this the fact that you have to get to shore by tender and the train station is 15 minutes walk from the port, coupled with an unnecessarily early departure, meant only around 4.5 hours was possible to explore the beautiful city of Stockholm. It was noticed other cruise lines docked within Stockholm itself, saving three hours of extra wasted travel time.
Our shore tours were arranged by ourselves and were all great with the local guides being informative and flexible to our needs.
So in summary we did really enjoy the cruise but would have enjoyed it even more had it been with another cruise line. Given the wide choice in available cruises we all agree we will never cruise with Holland America cruise lines again as there are better alternatives out there.
