Canada-New England Cruise: TRUE Hidden Gems to be Discovered

Sail Date: August 2013
Destination: Canada & New England
Embarkation: Other

Explorer of the Seas: Review of Food, Shows & Shore Excursions

Pre-Cruise:

Flew directly from Toronto to Newark

Took Royal Caribbean shuttle from Airport to Pier ($28 per person); Taxi was $23 per person; Ride is about 30 minutes to the Pier

Bayonne Pier:

Check-in was total chaos with those who had just disembarked still waiting for their transports whilst those who had just arrived waiting for over 1-hr to embark. RCL needs to greatly improve this facility which resembles an abandoned warehouse

Shows:

Excellent Cruise Director John Blair; Comedy shows were extremely funny and I have seen many shows but these ones were outstanding; The production shows were very good similar to other cruise lines but the Ice Skating show was amazing; The juggler on-board was excellent as well

Movies: no latest Hollywood blockbusters were screened (RCL needs to learn from Princess here); Movie room was very small and cramped; More Movies should have been screened in the Palace Theater

Food & Cabin: Had a deluxe balcony cabin Cat-E1 in Mid-ship; although the carpet in the cabin and hallways was a bit worn out, the ship was still in excellent condition; We last sailed on this ship in 2002 so we have very fond memories

You really do not need a balcony cabin on this cruise as it does get colder approaching New Brunswick and Halifax. So my advise is save your money and stick to an inside or outside

Excursions:

Boston: Took the superducks hop-on hop-off tour which cost $31 per person. Excellent tour (these buses have a panoramic view of the city compared to the Old town trolley tours that RCL sales on-board). You can buy the tickets as soon as you disembark at the pier

Portland: Took the RCL tour of Kenneybunkport;Excellent tour

Bar Harbor: Booked the Acadia National Park and Cadillac Mountain tour thru acadiatours at $30 per person; Tour was excellent; details are:

Acadia National Park Tours / National Park Tours and Transport, Inc.

207 288-0300 (Reserve Tickets)

207 266-4662 (Private Charters, Step On Guide Services)

www.acadiatours.com

(RCL wanted $112 per person for the same tour; go figure);

Saint John, New Brunswick: Took the RCL tour of St Martins Village and Caves; Excellent tour for $86 per person; excellent tour; could not go inside the caves because of the high tides

Halifax: Took the 10 most important points of interest in Halifax tour which included Peggy's cove,Titanic Burial Site; Victoria Gardens, Ship Building Dockyards, The Cathedral, The Queen's Residence and the Citadel Outlook; Excellent tour at $99 per person

Shuttle back from Bayonne Pier to Newark was $16 per person

whats else can I say but "Outstanding value for your money on an Outstanding ship with extremely pleasant passengers; average age was over 65 years". Don't settle for anything else.... Less

Cabin review: Explorer of the Seas Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom Deck 6

Balcony Cabin Cat-E1 mid-shipNot required on this Canada New England Cruise since it does get cold as you sail towards New Brunswick and Hailfax. so stick to the inside or outside and save your moneyCabin in very good condition despite the age of the ship although the carpet is a bit old. Plenty of closet space, great balcony, location a 2 minute walk to the elevators (no elevator noise). Can easily walk to the Palace Theater for the shows, however, the dining rooms were quite a walking distance
