Norwegian Fjords on Ryndam

Sail Date: August 2013
Destination: Baltic & Northern Europe
Embarkation: Dover

I booked the seven night fjord cruise as a 65th birthday present for my partner so we were really looking forward to it. We arrived at over about an hour before we set sail as I got the boarding time wrong. We were checked in and luggage sorted very quickly, shown to our cabin and the cases arrived about five minutes later. Had the safety talk and then set sail. We had the most beautiful evening to leave Dover. Our cabin was spacious with everything we needed, it was clean and it was in a quiet area with not many noisy people going past. WE explored the ship and found that there was enough to keep us going for our days at sea. The ship is one of Holland America's older ones but it was clean and well equipped.

We had opted for open dining which meant we could eat when (and we thought) where we liked. We therefore booked a restaurant for the first evening. We duly arrived, had a lovely meal with wine and thoroughly enjoyed the evening. We were therefore surprised to receive a More $25 each, supplement on our bill. We queried this and were told that we had to pay a supplement every time we ate outside the main dining room, we had not come across this before and were a bit annoyed because there wasn't anything to tell us about this in any of our literature or booking information. Anyway we got over that and continued to enjoy all the dining experiences on the ship.

We organised out own excursions in the ports as we thought the ship prices were really expensive e.g. a bus tour around Oslo cost us about £28 whereas the ship price was about £190.

This was a smaller ship than we had been on before but we found it extremely pleasant, good food and excellent entertainment.

I would try and get a cruise stating in Scotland next time as we had to drive from Edinburgh to Dover, we did get free parking though. Less

Cabin review: Ryndam Large Oceanview with Portholes A 555

Good cabin, spacious and everything we needed. If you are fat the bathroom might be a bit of a squeeze. Unrestricted view from porthole, quiet location near to lifts and stairs. Close to promenade decks so very convenient.
