Ship Facts: American Queen Review (by Cruise Critic!)
Wonderful trip on the Ohio river

A great trip overall

It started off with booking the cruise directly with AQSC

The Reservations lady Terri was very helpful & informative, answering all my questions & helping choose the right cabin for us

About three weeks before the cruise we still had not received documents while some others on the cruise after us had gotten theirs as mentioned on the Cruise Critic forum

A quick call to AQSC had the problem solved or so I thought

The docs were to be emailed out that day a week later still no docs starting to worry we had made the wrong choice for a cruise

Another call & docs were received that day .it should not be up to the passengers to chase down their documents

We arrived at the Omni William Penn hotel in Pittsburgh got checked in & went to the room, nice size room and amenities.

The hotel was in keeping with the steamboat theme, very nice decorations & the ceilings were a work of art.

The details on checking in with AQSC were a bit sketchy but all got sorted out eventually

They request bags be INSIDE your room & ready for pick up at 8am, not sure I like the idea of people opening your room when you are still sleeping but I guess it works as a wake up call as well

Wonder if there is a better system?

We opted not to do the pre cruise tour so went to the included breakfast then saw the line for the check in with AQSC it was right out the door & down the hall

We went back to the room for a bit then went down to the check in room got all our paperwork/photos taken care of in no time

Off to explore while we wait for our bus pick-up in the late afternoon

We got on the bus transfer to the ship at 3:45 pm at the ship in no time went aboard, bags were waiting to be unpacked

We unpacked while we waited for the life boat drill to begin at 4:30pm

We could not use the safe (someone did not read the instructions when they left the ship)

We saw the room attendant in the hall at the life boat drill & mentioned it to her

Basically she said not my problem, we went to the Purser after the drill & they said they would send someone never saw anyone that night

We found the walls in the cabins can be thin especially when others like to have the TV turned up & talk loudly

Next morning we requested a cabin change .we moved before lunch & this one had a working safe. So I could store my purse & other things

The new neighbours were a bit quieter but enjoyed early morning TV at 6am

First night we were told because of the small amount of passengers they would have 1 sitting, open dining for the cruise

It worked out quite well as we enjoyed meeting new people nightly

The meal was superb, much better than I had expected.

DH had the scallops that were cooked to perfection hard to do

He tried most of the vegetarian dishes that were offered for dinner during the week, all were very tasty

Did not have a bad meal the whole cruise

The wines with dinner & lunch were very good

Cabin: we were on deck 2 right by the theatre balconies so convenient if you went to the shows

We attended 1 show & 1 lecture, do not know where the time went

The ship was nicely decorated with period furnishing the only complaint I have is the public computer terminal ..It is the corner of the room & is very dark the small light on the wall does nothing for the ease of use (if you can even get to use it)

They really need better lighting there a desk lamp would probably work

I took my flashlight so I could see the keyboard

Each day a different town where the Steam Coaches took people around the town to points of interest.

You could hop on hop off or just stay on to see the town then decide what you wanted to see

We had a generator outage one night for a few seconds & the next day we were delayed in port until they fixed the problem

We were still to be onboard by 12:30 pm even though we did not leave until 6pm ..it was like being captive on the ship for several hours

The Captain announced it would be an open bar until we reached Cincinnati

Many took advantage of this option as noted by the noise in the hallways & decks that evening

The crew was very friendly & helpful always smiling

Very relaxing vacation

Loved the cruise & looking at another one in the future

Overall it is worth the extra $$ for the quality of food and service
