Excellent First Cruise
Destination: Western Caribbean
Embarkation: Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades)
OK, not going to bore everyone with a Day-by-Day style review. Never cruised before but after watching the documentary on the Discovery Channel two years ago, Oasis of the Seas seems to have the "Must-Do-It" factor for a first time cruise.
Not having anything to compare with and knowing this is a huge ship, research began a year ago which includes reading through hundreds of reviews on CruiseCritic, forum replies and numerous online videos. Booked the cruise 9 months before sailing on an Ocean View Balcony State room. Got pretty good rates and all the planning then began. Finally decided on the Specialty Dining package (excluding 150), Soda package, 12 bottles of Evian and two reasonably priced $50 excusions at Labadee (Snorkel Safari) and Cozumel (Reef Explorer). All shows were reserved 3 months ahead of time as well. Worked out pretty nicely.
Everybody know this is huge ship with 6,000 guests. The August 3rd cruise is packed to the rim. I don't mind seeing people, More so no problem here. Always plan ahead and you won't be disapponted. Windjammer Buffet always full? I do breakfast at 7:30am, Lunch at 11:30am Dinner at 6:00pm and there are more waiters than patrons. What line up?
The Specialty restaurants are superb. The 7 oz. Petit Filet Mignon at Chops Grill and the Hot Rock Tenderloin steak at Izumi is something to die for. It's so good I ended up visiting them again (outside of the dining package). The MDR is a disappointment though, tried regular and Lobster nights. Main course is too salty and desserts are too sweet. The Lobsters appears to be in frozen storage for months. You can't bite, it has to be chewed hard. That's the end of MDR for me. On the other hand, Roast Beef sandwich at the Park Cafe cannot be missed.
Internet is expensive, they are billed in minutes (75 cents/minute). You can opt for a package which reduces the per minute cost. It's soley up to your needs/budget. Surfing popular websites appears to be in quasi-broadband speed, but uploading is more like 56.6K. So if you update your FB or Blog daily with you cruise pics, prepare to shrink or crop a lot! The Royal Connect phones are in short supply, I went to the Card Room on Deck 14 right after boarding at 11:30am and there's only about a dozen left. They are very helpful in locating and contacting your family memebers/friends but performance is still hit or miss. I was told to do a software reset every morning...Hmmmm. But they're still much better than walkie talkies.
I skipped the "professional" pictures. $200 for 15 prints is not my idea of money well spent. Did not not do Spa, Casino and most of the Bar/Discos. Not interested.
In conclusion, Oasis of the Seas is a marvellous ship, you will never run out of activities and events on board. You do need to splurge a little on tips and other purchases, but like everyone says "You are on a Vacation"! Less

Great Ocean View balcony on the forward port side, 10th floor. Cabin may be too tiny when sofa bed has been extended at night time. Location is perfect, as it is half way to everything and can use the stairs extensively. Shower is strong and VERY hot, the lowest temperature setting only takes it to "warm" level. No cold showers 8-). No leaking wind noises, balcony door needs an extra twist to close firmly and blocks out all wind noises.
Port and Shore Excursions
Beautiful waters and surroundings. Merchants and Cb drivers too pushy. On the other hand, I did the Reef Explorer semi-sub. Great value for the fee. Ceasar the guide is impeccable. Does see a lot of fish but the deeper reefs are a bit far to see anything too clearly.
A bit more shopping choices than Labadee. Did not venture beyond the gates as things appear to be too "interesting" out there. Used the day to explore and tried out all the sporing facilities on the ship instead - when there's virtually no one on board.
