We took a 7 day Alaskan cruise on the Zuiderdam during July, 2013. There is not one bad thing to say.
Our verandah room offered spectacular views every day. We often saw whales and porpoises. There were no issues of concern with our room. Every morning, we ordered breakfast brought to the room and it was very good and on time. Housekeeping was performed twice a day when we were not in the room.
We were especially pleased with our meal server Pacar and wine server, John, working in the Lido dining room. Those 2 guys were friendly and at the same time very professional. Kudos to them and their team. The food was tasty and a good menu selection. I got addicted to the baked Alaska that was done a little bit different every day.
We took several shore excursions and they were all excellent. The best excursion was viewing Mendenhall Glacier and whale watching out of Juneau offered by Gastineau Guiding and sold through the ship. It was one excursion. Our guide was Aleta. Aleta knew of a stream along our route where we could observe spawning salmon. That was an unexpected treat. We also saw lots of humpback whales from the whale watching boat. Glacier viewing offered a wonderful photo opportunity as the scenery was breathtaking beautiful.
From Segway , we took the train trip, barbeque and gold panning excursion. It too was interesting and fun. We even found some gold but do not rush. It was a very small amount
If you have the time, book the 2 day pre cruise package tour of Vancouver and Vancouver Island. Our package included 2 nights at the Pan Pacific hotel that is conveniently located at the docks. There are lots of interesting sights and places to eat in that area. One of the days included a bus trip to Vancouver Island to visit Butchart Gardens and also the town of Victoria. Both Butchart Gardens and Victoria are two places we would like to revisit to spend more time.
