Marina Baltic Odyssey - Delightful Expeience

Sail Date: July 2013
Destination: Baltic & Northern Europe
Embarkation: Copenhagen

Our ten-day cruise through the Baltic Sea on the Marina was a delight.

The mid-size Marina had many features that my wife and I found attractive. The size of the ship was small enough that it was possible to become acquainted with several of the staff, and we never felt that we were being herded to an event or to a departure. Nor did we have to cope with ship photographers repeatedly taking your picture in hope of a purchase.

Our verandah cabin was more than adequate and fully met our needs. There was plenty of storage space for our clothes and luggage, and the bathroom offered both a tub and a separate shower. The cabin attendant was friendly and very efficient.

We were very pleased with the cuisine on board. We were able to obtain reservations in all four specialty restaurants. The food and service in Jacques and Red Ginger were especially good; the experience in Toscana was fine, but the Polo Grill's was ordinary. Meals in both the Grand Dining Room and More the Terrace Cafe/Waves Grill were excellent. We appreciated the informal character of the Grand Dining Room, in which you could request either a separate table or one at which you would share a meal with other guests. Both arrangements worked well. High Tea at 4PM in the Horizons Lounge topside was most welcome after an active day on land, and the musical accompaniment there varied from day to day.

A particular shout-out goes to the bartenders in the Martini Bar, Dane and Milan, who always made us feel welcome during Happy Hour, as well as to the pianist playing appropriate cocktail music nearby.

Land excursions were severely overpriced, so we booked our own. We were quite pleased with a 3-city package (Berlin, Helsinki and Stockholm) with Alla Tours, and the highlight of the trip as far as we were concerned was the 3-day private tour that we arranged with Timofey Kruglikov of Tailored Tours of St. Petersburg. Mr. Kruglikov provided us with an excellent overview of the historical, cultural, political and religious history of St. Petersburg; we could not have been more pleased.

All in all, we were very pleased with our experience aboard Marina and look forward to sailing with Oceania again. Less
