Jewel of the Seas summer 2013

Sail Date: July 2013
Destination: Southern Caribbean
Embarkation: San Juan

Sailed on the Jewel of the Seas July 13, 2013. Embarkation process was very smooth and we were able to quickly access our cabin. We had arrived at the port around 2:00 pm. The ship is scheduled for renovation in 2014 although I felt it was still in very good condition. The Solarium was quite beautiful and the food was delicious. We used My Time dining and did not make a specific reservation time but were always seated right away. I did miss having a specific waiter for the week. All the staff were very attentive and helpful.

The negatives of the ship were the entertainment. They either had a Broadway type show or a comedian in the theater each night but not much else. We tried going to the lounge for an "adult" game show and went early to get a seat. When all the late birds showed up and no seats were available, they were permitted to stand in the aisles which in effect made it impossible for us to see so we got up and left. They decided to have the deck party on the night we More were in port until 11 pm. We were exhausted from being gone all day and did not feel energetic enough to participate. The night before was a sea day and there wasn't much to do that evening. I thought it would have been better on another night like a sea day. In fact, most evenings the lido deck was mostly deserted.

Leaving the ship was not difficult. We were able to leave our suitcases in our room until around 8:30 and went up to eat breakfast. We don't leave our suitcases out the night before because of an issue we had on another ship that almost caused us to miss our flight. We went to the Coral theater and got in line to disembark. There is an elevator next to the escalator you can use to get down to the security clearance. Taxis were waiting to take us to the airport which took about 20 minutes to get to. Less

Cabin review: Jewel of the Seas Large Oceanview Stateroom Deck 3 3124

Our hallway was very quiet. Our cabin did have some sort of rattle noise that was a little bothersome at night but not too much. The cabin had a little refrigerator to keep snacks cold. The shower was a little interesting to get used to and a little small. We had an oceanview room.

Port and Shore Excursions

Took a tour with Sonny Binns.($30 pp) He took us to the Casibari rocks, the wild north coast and the Natural Bridge, the lighthouse and an old church. He dropped us off at Palm beach after. The tour took about 3.5 hours. He was very good and I highly recommend him. Chair rental at the beach was $5 each. Spent most of the day sunning and playing in the ocean. Went to Palm Beach pier for happy hour and dinner from 5-6 then headed down to Moombay bar for their happy hour from 6-7. It was a beautiful evening and we sat on beach chairs and watched the sun set over the ocean. Went outside the Holiday Inn and caught a taxi back to the ship for $14.

Took a taxi to Cas Abou. The beach was beautiful and there was a large rock about 10 feet off shore that you could snorkel around. There were many types of fish and I even was able to feed some bread crust to one by hand. Chair rental was $5 each. There was a shower and snack bar. It cost $2 pp to enter the beach. The taxi was quite expensive though as they charge pp. It was $60 e.w. Curacao seems to be in the beginning stages of upgrading to attract tourism. Most of the drive to the beach was through unattractive countryside at this point.

When we arrived in St. Kitt's we went past the first taxi station outside the gate and found a private taxi operator. We negotiated a price to take the four of us to South Friars beach. ($20 e.w.) We set an appointment for the taxi driver to return to take up back to the ship of 4:00. He came to get us just as we scheduled in fact didn't even want to be paid until he returned us. He also stopped at Timothy Hill for us to get a photo op. South Friars beach was beautiful and had restrooms, showers, bar and restaurant. Chair rental was $5 each.
